So lovely and appealing!
Mayo et mustard, but of course.
And fresh basil, like rathbone,
And feta cheese makes me smile.
Avocado!!!
Avocado!!!
Like magic are tomatoes,
Plus onions, very very small.
But nothing is better,
Or ever has been,
Than toasted sourdough,
Still warm.
Oh my sammich!
You are et.

Mmm...just shared half of a coconut with Miles. I can't remember the last time I cracked open a coconut. Yum! What a weird food. Prying it all out is half the fun. Maybe I will bake with the other half. Can you use fresh coconut for baking? Or macaroons...mmmm...okay, I'm fiending for sugar, apparently. And coconut. Sugar and coconut. And peppermint tea. Not together, of course. I just like peppermint tea.

My Grandpa always called me Doll-Face. My Grandpa was born in Kansas. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps created by Roosevelt's "new deal" program. My Grandpa was also in the U.S. Army Aircorps. He was a pilot. After that, he moved to L.A. and went to work for Howard Hughes as an electrical engineer. He worked there for 35 dedicated years, working his way up to the position of Senior Associate, even though he never went beyond the 9th grade, which is when his father died and he went to work to help support his mother and siblings. My Grandpa had a beautiful wife of 58 years. He had three sons and three grandchildren. He was a modest saver and well-liked by his peers. He had an extensive stamp collection and he didn't drink. Of all these things he was very proud. I was proud of him back. He was a strong man, a good provider, and a solid citizen. He was a grumpy old man for most of his life, but he loved the people in his life with all his heart. He lived a good life. He died yesterday of Alzheimer's Disease. It was my birthday. I miss him.

No, not the little green men - it's the BBC drama Life On Mars. Fuck I love this show. It is bizarre and intriguing and terribly British. I'm a TV hatah by nature but for a really smart and funny and original show like this, I'll go through the trouble of catching it on the DVR and skipping the nasty old commercials to watch the good bits (that is to say, the show). This guy does a great hurt/confused/angry/alone man out of time, and the rest of the cast form a totally realistic world for him to be lost in. Cracking good time!

We had a great time at the gallery reception last night! Before the show, Ken came over for dinner and then the three of us made the treacherous journey into Beverly Hills. The place was pretty full, and of course Free's paintings were fabulous! Nice wine and Cuban cigars were free-flowing. Can't wait to see the solo show next month! Afterwards we had midnight coffee and snacks at Jerry's Deli with Free and Ken. It was really good to hang out with friends we haven't seen for a while. The night was a success, yes, yes!

This weekend has seemed especially long for me. Miles had to work all day Saturday, and half of today (Monday, Labor Day), but the thing is, I've been getting up with him at 6am, even though I didn't have to work. I'm not a morning person, but I am a laze around in a blurred state until 9am kinda person, so it kinda worked for me. I got up, had coffee, and did like three things even before my normal time to get up. It was nice. It made the weekend feel really, really long. Usually I feel the precious, precious minutes just slipping by me - most of them while I'm sleeping in - but this time, I felt like I had all the time in the world, even if it was too damn HOT to go anywhere. I still enjoyed my quiet time alone very much. Me and the cat just took our time doing not much of anything. Now if I only had just one more day...

Anybody see this? Oooh, it's purty. I thought it was actually going to be filmed in the deep sea (silly me), but the incredible coral reef footage was just stunning! Fabulous show, lots of fun, and anyway, who doesn't like 3D? :)

This here's a turtle for Tara. No, scratch that... This here's a tortoise - AN TORTOISE, mind you - for Tara, all for her very own. It is a leopard tortoise. It lives in Africa. This one I have named Potato. Nice Potato. Tara, this tortoise is for you. Some people might not see the point to having a picture of a super-special leopard tortoise for their very very own, but I know you will see. You'll see that this is your tortoise, your very very own, and his name is Potato and he lives in Africa. Do you see, Tara? Do you see? Nice Potato.

<<From Reuters:>>
"Rare newborn albino Pygmy Marmoset monkeys perch on a zookeeper's fingers at Froso Zoo in Ostersund, Sweden August 22, 2006. The Pygmy Marmoset, which lives in the upper Amazon basin in South America, is the world's smallest monkey and reaches 35 cm (13.7 inches) in length and weighs up to 100 grams (3.5 ounces) at maturity."

When I was very young, I used to wish I were the smallest thing. Like Thumbelina, like a tiny kitten, and if I had known of them, I would have wished to be the world's smallest monkey. Every ordinary household item a mountain to me, every pillow a great expanse of bilowing clouds. Clinging to this world by the smallest thread, I could ride around in your shirt pocket, I could fit under locked doors.

Strangely enough, however, I was always horrified and repelled by the thought of the Incredible Shrinking Man, becoming smaller and smaller, until... *pop*... no more.

This weekend we had our neighbors over for SUSHI! I love to cook, and the more challenging the cuisine, the better. I don't even eat fish, but I love to make sushi, and I guess it must have turned out all right, since there wasn't a single piece saved from the devastation that followed shortly after this picture was taken!

I made spicy tuna rolls, a caterpillar roll, a baked salmon roll, numerous veggie rolls, an avacado roll, some inari, tamago (sweet egg) sushi, salmon sushi, and ahi tuna sushi. That and a whole lot of sake made for one damn fine meal!

So what's the coolest thing you have ever prepared? It doesn't have to be something extra-difficult, just fun.

Well if we ever needed to get away for the weekend, it was this weekend. And what better thing to do than to head out of town to visit friends and go wine tasting in Paso Robles? Our friends Paul and Houry, and the wee Paul 2 (not the second, just two) treated us to a fabulous wine tour extravaganza, complete with a funky winery with funny hats and wigs. It was a blast! Houry, you look lovely as Marge, and Paul, I seriously think you should consider first growing some hair and then dying it cosmic green - hey, you'll match my car! Anyway, thanks to you three for having us over and for showing us what's always sure to be a good time, cuz you guys really do so totally rock!
