strange words

Sometimes I run across a word that just seems odd. It could be a rarely used word that gets me pondering. Sometimes it's a common everyday word that trips me up. I'll never forget in junior high school, when this happened. I was writing a note in a hurry and was stumped on the word "been". (Seems strange and embarassing to admit this now). At first try I wrote "ben". Havign a hunch that it was off, I rewrote "bin". Then back to "ben" and then frustrated, knowing it wasn't right, I changed my sentance to avoid the word entirely.

Having a word evade me is more than a bit unsettling, like having an acute bout of amnesia. It's like forgetting a good friend's name or forgetting why you walk into a room. Alas, it passes, and all is normal again.

Today's weird word is "vouch".

Innit weird?

What words sound strange to you today?

julio - "The bread is funky"

scott - "Yeah, this is really cakey focaccia"

jim - "I knew a prostitute named Cakey Focaccia once."

julio - "was she like this?"

jim - "Just like this, but cheaper."

Jinkeez! (I think)

How do you spell jinkeez? This way doesn't look right, but it sounds right. After doign a search for it, Google's "Did you mean?" suggestion is "junkeez". And searching that found a ton more listings for Thelma and Scooby-Doo.

Junkeez?!? Is that what they were saying in scooby-doo?

Keepers

I was running late to help a friend move, I stopped my bike to examine discarded things beside the curb. It's Trash. It's Treasure. It's Grassroots Recycling. More treasures than can be dreamed of... a hard cover book with marginalia, wooden box of acrylics, boxing gloves with the american flag on them, and dippy plants. I see countless potential lives for everything. And then the rush of voices from friends that have moved me, complaining about my abundant peculiarities. Jim will forever tell others how he had to carry a box of rocks down three floors, and then, up three floors. I'm damn grateful to have friends like that. I concede that I have plenty of actual junk. I decide to listen and not take everything that catches my eye, but I cannot pass up the the beat-up plaster fertility goddess. It's heavy, but it fits in my messenger bag. And I'm off again.

House Hunt

Looking for a room in a interesting space to live for around $900-1200/mo. The place has something special to offer ie: great backyard, a rooftop, a artists workspace, bright colors and interesting artwork, whatever. I'm looking in the Potrero/Mission areas, but the location isn't as important as long as it's a great place, near MUNI and near a good coffee shop. Of course the roommate(s) are the most important. Roommate(s) should be easy going people who like to socialize, respectful, and are progressive/tollerant/ and open-minded. I enjoy living in a creative and stable home, I keep my areas tidy and the common areas tidier. I'm a working graphic designer, 37, socially active, respectful, food-lover, an art and culture nut, burner, traveler, etc. Let's talk and see about meeting up.

Awesome

I have no idea who's responsible for this image, but they are awesome. The idea behind it is awesome, the illustration is awesome and the text in white kills me. (It smacks of truth from when I was ten years old; something so deeply ture that continues to this day).

Episode III: The Backstroke of the west

Jeremy from the winterson.com came upon a Chinese copy of Episode III Revenge of the Sith and discovered some pretty hilarious misinterpretations. He's posted several screen captures.

The World's Best Prom

Every prom story is unique. But some are more unique than others. Take Manny's prom, for instance. He brought a vacuum as his date—and lived to tell about it. In Vince and Brian's quest for the incomparable night, they decided to be the guys who wrote the evening's song. The chorus went as follows:
I want to go to prahhhhhm,
Tuxedo paid for by my mahhhhhm,
My date looked like the bahhhhhmb,
So hot she set off alaaaaahrms.

Their tune didn't play until the very end, but it earned them accolades for the rest of the school year (which, sadly, ended two days later). Finally, consider the entire town of Racine, Wisconsin. It throws a citywide prom bash each year that rivals the Academy Awards, Mardi Gras, and the MTV Video Music Awards. Combined. (From Yahoo! Society & Culture)
