Margaret Wertheim, "Space versus Spirit: Why the Battle between Science and Religion is Driving us Crazy"

Sunday December 24, 2006 at 9pm on KPCC 89.3 FM

Science and religion are often viewed as two competing and utterly opposed worldviews--one based on faith, the other on reason. Yet both are systems that attempt to make sense of the world and of humanity's place within a wider cosmological scheme.

8 Reasons Why Going Back to the Moon Is Loony

By MARGARET WERTHEIM
Thursday, April 27, 2006 - 6:00 pm
In January 2004, President Bush committed the U.S. to returning to the moon by 2020. No human has set foot on our celestial satellite for 30 years, but many space enthusiasts believe the moon should be our staging post for journeys to Mars, a destination Bush has also made a NASA priority.

Politics & Slope of PsYberNetic Crisis

what? from rose rose on realitysandwich Google is the first psychedelically informed superpower to shape the noosphere and NASDAQ. I don't mean that Googlers (necessarily) are all seasoned psychonauts, or (necessarily) take 4:20 breaks on-campus, or are well represented (necessarily) at Burning Man. Nor am I saying that psychedelics “caused” Google, any more than a Stanford education did. I do

Bush was using a familiar right-wing tactic: identifying himself with a military uniform and the stature of the military in general, when he had no military stature himself. Rudy Guiliani used the same tactic in his ad in Friday's New York Times: by associating himself with Petraeus' rank and role, hoping some of the stature of the military would rub off on him. The implicit message is an attack

Do You Believe in Magic?

SHROOM

A Cultural History of the Magic Mushroom.

By Andy Letcher.

Illustrated. 360 pp. Ecco/HarperCollins Publishers. $25.95.

My friends here in western Massachusetts usually don’t let me down. Kris, the truck-stop waitress, referred me to Michelle, a bartender at the gentlemen’s club down the road, who directed me to Kim, the red-haired dancer with an ankh-tattoo armband, who referred me to an ex-boyfriend’s wife’s girlfriend, another redhead, who met me outside an American Legion hall in Chicopee (Nipmuck for “land of violent pee”) and informed me that magic mushrooms were “out of season,” but she could get me LSD instead. “Acid — same deal as mushrooms,” she said. Besides, she wondered why a guy in his 60s wanted to experiment with shrooms. The answer was obvious. I had a review to write.

the dosenation review & Shroom bring up more of the dirty laundry and misconstrued history of Psychedelics from the last 65 years.  The Major Issue is who is to blame for

the US drug laws that make it so difficult to do research. Leary is usually a suspect, but Aldous Huxley and R. Gordon Wasson  were the  earliest  Perps.  The Media itself is to blame also.  And where is the "Public" and their Politics? The Citizens have not asserted themselves to get  better

Cognitive Liberty installed. Based on recent numbers, by back-dating the Pot Busts, we get

over 35,000,000 people  busted  for  Pot in last  41  years!  M.

DoseNation reviews new book, Shroom: the Cultural history of the Magic Mushroom by Andy Letcher...

Letcher pushes forward into the roots of the cultural movement that elevated the humble mushroom into an archaic religious symbol for an increasingly cynical age, and the primary target of this academic hit job is the legendary banker-turned-amateur ethnomycologist R. Gordon Wasson, the originator of the sacred mushroom myth. To say that Letcher has a bone to pick with Wasson would be putting it mildly. Let's just say Letcher barely masks his glee in annihilating this man's historical legacy, not only peeling apart his legendary theories one after the other, but criticizing the man himself for being somewhat stubborn and single-minded; too blinded by his own theory to do the proper research; too quick to mold the facts to meet his preconceptions; too arrogant and forthright to allow dissenting voices to penetrate his mythos. It is a view of Wasson I have never seen before -- including new insights into his relationship with Maria Sabina -- and like much of this book, contains a wealth of new material.

DoseNation reports a book review :

The Washington Times Review of 'Shroom'

The Washington Times chimes in with a favorable review of 'Shroom', a text we've covered in some detail on this site. Another interesting bit of wisdom from the review:

Some of the facts Mr. Letcher confirms are at least as strange as the legends he debunks. Siberians, for instance, really do have a history of consuming fly-agaric mushrooms not only directly but also "distilled via human kidneys."
