If you want to know about Tammy ask her, although of course you might have to compress your questions inside that small space between her multiple activities, or catch her in transit between books clubs and dance clubs, and if you do manage to stake a few words don’t ask her about solipsism but look it up beforehand--in the dictionary, in Nabokov, or in Bellow--and then, if her admirers haven't already shoved you aside in midsentence (you noticed them before, didn’t you?), or if her interest hasn't waned because you’re sta-sta-stammering (you didn’t stammer before, now did you?), then do ask her what you want to know. She'll tell you, but please: no drooling on her costume.
