july 2006 - looking for work in oregon - information technology - system administration

<div>i would like to be introduced to a company that would be willing to give me a chance to work in the field of information technology again. i was "laid off due to corporate downsizing" in 2001. shortly after that, sept 11 happened... throwing the computer industry in a tailspin of hiring freezes.

we all have heard the layoff stories. i got to the point of doubting my skills. i had to deal with two deaths in my family. yada yada yada. things were bleak for awhile.

but, i took some classes in this past year and realized that i remembered more than i thought.

i only need the chance to be able to work with the software and hardware to brush up my skills. i believe that i could get up to speed again if a company put me in an mid-level position to prove myself.

i am a very hard worker. i have a broad range of experience in technical support of computer software and hardware; including operating system support, software installation, troubleshooting, network management, hardware integration, backup and recovery of data, relational database administration, account management, scripting and programming languages, etc...

i have moved to oregon.

<div>i have been meeting quite a few new people in the past few months from all walks of life. i love people!

in my conversations with them, more often than not, i have been told... "i don't know why i am telling you this...", "i usually don't open up to people...", and "for some reason, i feel really comfortable around you".

it has been making me think that i should explore more about myself and the posibilities of my power as a child of light... (i am on a permenent self-exploration tour...)

i have very close friends that would say the same things. maybe that is why we have all become such good friends!

but they are the same way!

moving to portland has been quite an interesting turn of events for me. it has definately humbled me. it has made me very grateful for the few things that i have... and now it is making me wonder allot more about myself...

the past six months have been a whirlwind of events, emotions, and changes!!!

i am now ready to start writing about it...

to be continued....

<div>dec 2005

all my life i have always felt i had to guess how you feel about me. wondering what you feel for me... your daughter! maybe that is not fair to say. but look back at the years of fighting, hurtful words, and tears.

i try and put a halt to an argument that is quickly escalating to hurtful and resentful overtones.

walk away they say... calm down and com back to it later. don't regret your words or actions because you choose them in rage.

how often do you sit and listen to someone degrade you, belittle you, and insult you... with no reaction?!

you try and back me into a corner. push me around like you did when i was a child. still trying to get me to hit you back. i have never struck you! but this time i stopped you from hitting me.

i plead with you, "don't make this fight worse than it already is! you don't even know why you are yelling at me anymore..."

nobody can make me mad but you illicit rage in me! i don't know why i allow you to have that power over me!

why did you choose to bring me into this world? when did you start losing you patience with me as a child? when did you stop defending me from your abusive boyfriend and start hitting me to keep me in line? when is it your turn to say " i am sorry. i won't hurt you again..."

Private Firms Do US Military's Work: AP Article from 8/29/03
By Jim Krane*
Associated Press
October 29, 2003

In Iraq, private contractors do just about everything a soldier would do. They sling Spam in mess tents. They tote guns along base perimeters. They shoot. They get shot. Sometimes they get killed. And it's not just in Iraq, but around the world - in conflict zones from Liberia to Kosovo to Afghanistan - that the United States is putting hired help behind the front lines to ease the burden of its overworked armed forces. By paying civilians to handle military tasks, the Bush administration is freeing up U.S. troops to fight. But the use of contractors also hides the true costs of war. Their dead aren't added to official body counts. Their duties - and profits - are hidden by close-mouthed executives who won't give details to Congress. And as their coffers and roles swell, companies are funneling earnings into political campaigns and gaining influence over military policy - even getting paid to recommend themselves for lucrative contracts.

For the civilians handling these soldierly jobs, the risks are high. A contractor near the Iraqi city of Fallujah died and an American engineer was wounded when their vehicles came under attack Monday - possibly by U.S. soldiers, said the British-based company, European Landmine Solutions. U.S. officials said their soldiers weren't responsible. The chief military contractor in Iraq, Kellogg, Brown &amp; Root, has had three workers killed in Iraq, two of whom died in ambushes. Another top U.S. military contractor, DynCorp, saw three of its workers killed in an ambush by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip this month. In Afghanistan, two civilian contractors working for the CIA were slain in an ambush Saturday. And in Liberia, contractors guarding the U.S. Embassy have fought like soldiers during rebel sieges, at times lifting guns from slain rebels, said Horacio "Hersh" Hernandez, a retired Marine with Intercon security in Liberia. He owes his job, he says, to post-Cold War defense cuts and a slew of new U.S. engagements. "It's a massive business boom for the private security field," Hernandez said.

As the United States slashes the size of its standing army from 2.1 million in 1990 to 1.4 million now, the Pentagon began running out of soldiers to handle postwar violence in Iraq and Afghanistan and peacekeeping in Bosnia and Kosovo while facing threats elsewhere. Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld argued wars could still be fought without boosting the number of soldiers by outsourcing just about everything except battlefield gunning. Under U.S. employ in Iraq, American companies turn profits while operating missile defense batteries, piloting unmanned aerial vehicles and snapping satellite pictures of bombing targets. The machine-gun toting guards who shadow Afghan President Hamid Karzai and L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator in Iraq, are private-sector workers, as are those who built and operate the cavernous white mess tent on the base of the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment in Baghdad. There, a $3 million contract with Kellogg, Brown &amp; Root paid for the tent's construction and the Bangladeshi and Indian cooks who feed 4,000 troops daily. One soldier breakfasting inside the tent, a nine-year veteran, said she's been sent to patrol Baghdad since contractors took her job as a cook. With Kellogg, Brown &amp; Root handling everything from mail delivery to bug control on U.S. bases in Iraq and around the world, plenty of other soldiers are finding themselves on the front lines.

Peter W. Singer, a Brookings Institution military analyst, estimates there is one contractor for every 10 foreign soldiers in Iraq - 10 times the private involvement in the Gulf War. Worldwide, private military companies earn about $100 billion in yearly government contracts, Singer believes. Ninety private military companies are listed on the Web site for the Center for Public Integrity. In comparison, the U.S. defense budget is about $380 billion this year, excluding emergency spending, and is expected to rise to more than $400 billion. Some of the firms working in Iraq are huge, politically connected conglomerates like Halliburton - corporate parent of Kellogg, Brown &amp; Root and formerly headed by Vice President Dick Cheney. Others are little known, like Erinys, a security firm chocked with former South African special forces that will train 6,500 Iraqis to guard oil installations.

The world of military contracts is a murky one. In Iraq and Afghanistan, important buildings in the capitals bristle with gun-toting Americans in sunglasses. They favor khaki photographers' vests and a few military accoutrements, but lack the name tags and identifying patches of a soldier. Ask who they work for and one often hears "no comment" or "I can't tell you that." Contractors' deaths aren't counted among the tally of more than 350 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq. No one is sure how many private workers have been killed, or, indeed, even how many are toiling in Iraq for the U.S. government. Estimates range from under 10,000 to more than 20,000 - which could make private contractors the largest U.S. coalition partner ahead of Britain's 11,000 troops. Global Risks Strategies, a security firm with about 1,100 workers on the ground - mainly armed former Nepalese and Fijian soldiers - is among security companies that have more personnel in Iraq than some other countries taking part in the occupation, Singer said. To the consternation of U.S. lawmakers, there is little or no Congressional oversight of contractors hired by the executive branch of government - whether through the State Department, Pentagon or the CIA. Many, like San Diego-based Science Applications International Corp., which trains Iraqi journalists, police and soldiers, are privately held firms employing ex-soldiers and spies. "We refrain from talking about things our customers don't want us talking about," said Science Applications spokesman Jason McIntosh. "That's just good policy." Some private contracts look like covert operations once handled by the CIA - such as cocaine eradication in South America now done by companies that fly crop-dusters in Colombia. In September, a contractor's spray plane was shot down and its pilot killed in Colombia. Then in February, three employees of California Microwave Systems were captured by a rebel group when their plane crashed on a U.S. anti-drug mission.

Had those been U.S. soldiers, the public outcry and government response would have been sharp, said Deborah Avant, a political scientist at George Washington University. The connection between companies and politicians in Washington raises the specter of executives lobbying for a hawkish U.S. foreign policy since they profit from war, Avant said. Iraq contractors DynCorp, Bechtel and Halliburton donated more than $2.2 million - mainly to Republican causes like the 2000 Bush presidential campaign - between 1999 and 2002, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. In the case of Halliburton, the U.S. government hired the company in Iraq without a competitive bid, after the company recommended itself in a study. Halliburton's Iraq oil services contract, worth $1.59 billion so far, will be extended until December or January. The company reported Wednesday that its government work in Iraq and elsewhere helped boost yearly third-quarter earnings by 39 percent, to $4.14 billion. Contractors don't appear to be pulling personnel out of Iraq despite attacks - something that has chased U.S. forces out of hotspots before.

AP writers Austin Merrill in Monrovia, Liberia, and Tini Tran in Baghdad, Iraq, contributed to this report.

'Trophy' video exposes private security contractors shooting up Iraqi drivers
By Sean Rayment, Defence Correspondent
(Filed: 27/11/2005)

A "trophy" video appearing to show security guards in Baghdad randomly shooting Iraqi civilians has sparked two investigations after it was posted on the internet, the Sunday Telegraph can reveal.

The video has sparked concern that private security companies, which are not subject to any form of regulation either in Britain or in Iraq, could be responsible for the deaths of hundreds of innocent Iraqis.

Lt Col Tim Spicer is investigating the incident
The video, which first appeared on a website that has been linked unofficially to Aegis Defence Services, contained four separate clips, in which security guards open fire with automatic rifles at civilian cars. All of the shooting incidents apparently took place on "route Irish", a road that links the airport to Baghdad.

The road has acquired the dubious distinction of being the most dangerous in the world because of the number of suicide attacks and ambushes carried out by insurgents against coalition troops. In one four-month period earlier this year it was the scene of 150 attacks.

In one of the videoed attacks, a Mercedes is fired on at a distance of several hundred yards before it crashes in to a civilian taxi. In the last clip, a white civilian car is raked with machine gun fire as it approaches an unidentified security company vehicle. Bullets can be seen hitting the vehicle before it comes to a slow stop.

There are no clues as to the shooter but either a Scottish or Irish accent can be heard in at least one of the clips above Elvis Presley's Mystery Train, the music which accompanies the video.

Last night a spokesman for defence firm Aegis Defence Services - set up in 2002 by Lt Col Tim Spicer, a former Scots Guards officer - confirmed that the company was carrying out an internal investigation to see if any of their employees were involved.

The Foreign Office has also confirmed that it is investigating the contents of the video in conjunction with Aegis, one of the biggest security companies operating in Iraq. The company was recently awarded a £220 million security contract in Iraq by the United States government. Aegis conducts a number of security duties and helped with the collection of ballot papers in the country's recent referendum

Lt Col Spicer, 53, rose to public prominence in 1998 when his private military company Sandlines International was accused of breaking United Nations sanctions by selling arms to Sierra Leone.

The video first appeared on the website www.aegisIraq.co.uk. The website states: "This site does not belong to Aegis Defence Ltd, it belongs to the men on the ground who are the heart and soul of the company." The clips have been removed.

The website also contains a message from Lt Col Spicer, which reads: "I am concerned about media interest in this site and I remind everyone of their contractual obligation not to speak to or assist the media without clearing it with the project management or Aegis London.

"Refrain from posting anything which is detrimental to the company since this could result in the loss or curtailment of our contract with resultant loss for everybody."

Security companies awarded contracts by the US administration in Iraq adopt the same rules for opening fire as the American military. US military vehicles carry a sign warning drivers to keep their distance from the vehicle. The warning which appears in both Arabic and English reads "Danger. Keep back. Authorised to use lethal force." A similar warning is also displayed on the rear of vehicles belonging to Aegis.

Capt Adnan Tawfiq of the Iraqi Interior Ministry which deals with compensation issues, has told the Sunday Telegraph that he has received numerous claims from families who allege that their relatives have been shot by private security contractors travelling in road convoys.

He said: "When the security companies kill people they just drive away and nothing is done. Sometimes we ring the companies concerned and they deny everything. The families don't get any money or compensation. I would say we have had about 50-60 incidents of this kind."

A spokesman for Aegis Defence Services, said: "There is nothing to indicate that these film clips are in any way connected to Aegis."

Last night a spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "Aegis have assured us that there is nothing on the video to suggest that it has anything to do with their company. This is now a matter for the American authorities because Aegis is under contract to the United States."</div>

    </a>
										<div>*gift*

may the stars
shine bright enough for you to see
that the bright shining light is thee.

rest now your weary feet,
for you no longer need to seek
outside yourself.
it is within.
hush your mind
and let the journey begin.

feel your love exponentially grow,
reaching deep into your soul...
and healing
with this magnificent feeling.

all you must do is remove the definitions.
break this identification
that chattels us
with irrelevant information.

release, relax, and deep breath&amp;hellip;''
just be.
liberate yourself by hearing your heartbeat.

no more defeat
to feel
and drag you down.
fly high
with your minds eye
and see that radiating light&amp;hellip;''
is right
inside.

with each breath
that we take.
with each day
that we awake.
what a wondrous thing!
to be aware&amp;hellip;''

or are we just fooling ourselves?
trying to grow halfheartedly?

our capacity
can be limited
only by one&amp;rsquo;s self.
not by anyone else.
mostly, because we cannot see
what a gift we are to thee.

awakening happens very subtly.
listen to your own truths&amp;hellip;''
for no path is alike.
just remember we are all on this hike
and journey within.

we are all just human.
living.
breathing.
this we share.
he, she, we
and our idiosyncrasies&amp;hellip;''
will be
in this moment&amp;hellip;''
our own reality.

so, treat it with care.
this precious gift
is for all of us to share.
this is your present&amp;hellip;''
love if you dare!

9. Open arms to change, but don&amp;rsquo;t let go of your values.

This is a quote from Alice In Wonderland--> Alice: "...Well, when- when one&amp;rsquo;s lost, I- I suppose it&amp;rsquo;s good advice to stay where you are, until someone finds you. But- but who&amp;rsquo;d ever think to look for me here? Good advice. If I listened earlier I wouldn&amp;rsquo;t be here! But that&amp;rsquo;s just the trouble with me. I give myself very good advice... but I very seldom follow it. That explains the trouble that I&amp;rsquo;m always in. Be patient is very good advice, but the waiting makes me curious. And I'd love the change, should something strange begin. Well, I went along my merry way, and I never stopped to reason. I should have known there&amp;rsquo;d be a price to pay, some day. Some day. I give myself very good advice, but I very seldom follow it. Will I ever learn to do the things I should?"</div>

Try to stay on the lighter side of things today, tamala. Unfortunately, this may be a bit easier said than done. It could be that you are the bridge that is trying to connect an island to the shore. The water is rising and the island is about to be swallowed up completely. People are scrambling to reach you. Be careful that the situation doesn't become an issue of self-sacrifice. Under so much weight and pressure, the bridge is apt to sag or even break.

A great day is ahead for you, Eight. Be sure to get your ducks in a row when it comes to meetings and business strategies, as it's an Eight day and the universe is your oyster. Don't cloud your thoughts with past mishaps or insecurities today. Take that innate confidence and move forward with the attitude that you can do whatever you set your mind to do. Expansion and opportunity will present themselves to you. Grab them and make the most of what you have before you. Take those strides towards success.</div>

<div>*beautiful one* written to me by my dear friend luv!

Beautiful one, resplendent and bold. Though you age every minute, you are not yet old. Youth runs deep in hearts that dare to be. And deeper still in hearts, with mind and spirit free.

Strong woman, yet girl, how do you do? Take a moment of myself and move me to you? Not settle on this understanding of my mind, but rather make me think as if of one kind.

You and I are instant, constant, and unconditionally above. Stability in knowing, forever friends are also family love. And so I say so beautiful the thoughts within you are. Moments of revelations, clarifications, a simple star.

You stand in all the glory of yourself along your waterline, ready to take another step realizing you'll be fine. A creation you are, still molding the frame of I. Yourself alone and yet will never be, no questions why.

Be wholly what you are and revel in your you. 'Cause everyone has to begin alone once beginning new. Make a decision to create your happy now, and later you will understand you must be first to vow.

To you you answer. I try to explain some. But my words are not yours though the ears my grow numb. I saw you in a moment I've decided for me. A certain unknown essence to remind me I am free.

To soak up the you takes nothing at all, for hours upon hours, spring lasting to fall. You opened, I saw, and so thankfully too. Been looking for someone and realized it was you.

Two women together and no negative vibe. All positive movements toward family and tribe. To get what it is and share it with smiles, regardless of distance and worth any miles.

Reflections astound me. Awaken my head. Another big part that I'd thought was so dead. Create new beginnings, examine the past, forgive all that was because moments go fast.

I love all that made you 'cause that's what you are. Take time to say something all feelings not far. In a united state we contemplate the all of only one. One single loved one stepping out into the sun.

Fresh faced darling, create the world. The universe tells not of its fantasy unfurled. New eyes drift in thought, thought I do not know. No shadows upon you, so begin and let go.

Myself I see before me in pieces of your ness. Toward happy always wanting not a lot but nothing less. Remind me how young I really am, begin right now, but in your smile saw true colors, vibrant, absolutely wow.

I know not of the normal growth of any common thing. I just accept for what it is and sometimes want to sing. Try to make honest complete pure love, forgiveness with no fear. Take all I am 'cause it is me, and move beyond the mirror.

The somewhat conscious questions speak, and with no answer known, we'll look to one another face forward, or on the phone. Each moment as is without fear is just a memory. Regardless I have fit so much inside such possibility.

Existing only loving bringing true reponsibility. Respect is you with energies abounding with such probability. Friend then forever I have called you out, to allow me to show you what my I is all about.

Such a spark of joy will soon burn loud and proud, when realizing all of everything that hasn't been allowed. No judges here I say, 'cause there is no comparing. Love beyond yourself and give all that you can to caring.

You are the circle binding tightly round it all. It doesn't matter what is wrong, no looking toward a fall. Everyone must fly with me because It's so astounding. Now that you see the parts of me I can help you keep your grounding.

I give to you because I see it right back. Immediately offering whatever I may lack. Appreciation is strong to all that you do. I'm loving you total because you're just being you.

*animal wisdom* by c. van sandwyk

<div>About the Artist

Charles van Sandwyk, best known for creating engaging mythical creatures depicting the human condition, is quickly gaining an international reputation as an artist, author and illustrator of children's books.

Charles Noel van Sandwyk was born May 12, 1966 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Growing up in South Africa had a profound influence on his art and early life. His English mother and Dutch father were avid nature watchers. As a young child, he spent many hours with his parents and older brother observing the wonders of birds and animals in the local landscape. Charles was an avid young reader. Influenced by detailed 19th century English and Dutch prints and paintings that adorned the family home, he spent many hours drawing and illustrating aspects of the many books he read, such as J.R. Tolkein's, The Hobbit. Living in South Africa amid mixed cultures, he also learned much about the need for cooperation and understanding amongst peoples.

When Charles was 11, he emigrated with his family to North Vancouver and began a new life amidst fir trees and rain. He attended Seycove Secondary School in North Vancouver and with the inspiration and guidance of art teacher George Knapp, began to seriously pursue his talents as an artist. Following graduation, he enrolled in the Graphic Design program at Capilano College where he further developed his illustration skills and completed his diploma with honours.

With the wanderlust of a young man, he travelled the world and discovered the magic of the Fiji Islands, where for part of each year, he now calls his home. It is there that he draws much of the inspiration for his current work, including The Ship of Wisdom. Charles also lives and works part of each year in Deep Cove, North Vancouver.

He has received numerous honours for his work including a 1986 Alcan Award for his first handmade book A Selection of Neighbourly Birds. The National Library of Canada has also maintained an archive of his work since 1986. He has a large local following who regularly collect his prints, paintings and books. His work can also be found in collections across North America, Europe and in Japan.

*animal wisdom* by c. van sandwyk

A wise old bird sits beside the heart
of humanity. She recalls a time --
long before mankind stood upright
and walked so proudly upon two feet --
when man and beast drank together,
with equality,
from the same cup of life.
She is the spirit of nature,
and she urges us
to take heed of the wisdom of the wild.

Remember your roots
for they are common to us all.
They are the scented earth and the waving
grass. All yearnings are born ultimately
of nature, for however far we may journey,
that is our beginning.

Live and love beyond earthly achievement,
in the knowledge that there will always be
those among us who seem greater, or lesser,
than ourselves.
In showing grace towards all creatures,
we recognize the vitality of each.

Tasks that seem effortless to some
may be impossible for others, so true
generosity has no expectations of return.
In the cycle of giving, one is assisted
by many.
As well, there are countless others in need
to whom a simple favour, well performed,
comes as a blessing.

Beauty is often found in the most fleeting,
fragile things.
The greatest beauty of all is in the sweet
song of truth which grants even the frail
a strong will.
~~
"Love doth make the living whole,
And seeds of truth will feed the soul."

The winds of change
blow favourably
upon all who seek
their direction.

The gift
of light-heartedness
is the life-blood of the spirit.

All fine deeds have humble beginnings,
even small actions have the power to make
a difference.
Often, the things we fervently seek cannot
be found with our eyes. In important
matters we must search
with all our heart.

We keep to the rhythm of our own lives,
for the true heart moves slowly and takes care
of small things, even in the vast landscape
of the unknown.
Quality knows no time, no distance, and no
boundaries. Even the grains of sand in their
minuteness, and the stars at their great distance
are duly noted by many contented eyes.
Wherever we go, we carry this contentment
with us, and offer it freely --
for it doubles with the giving.

So follow in the steps
of such gentle feet, for the world is
a small place. Though many oceans
we have, from afar they are one.
Sometimes it seems we can cradle
the soul of our great earth
in the palm of one hand.

To live a dignified life
is to seek out the ways
of respect and humility.
True honour is accepted with sincerity,
even by those whom nature has placed
in apparent favour.

So the wise old bird with the gentle heart
looks to the future, remembering the past.
She considers mankind the most blessed --
having much to learn and a world so willing
to teach.
Humanity has so much to offer,
and the world is ready
to listen.

To linger fondly in the heart and mind
is the noble legacy of human-kind.
