I'll be choreographing for Suhaila Salimpour's Repertory Ensemble!!! ~my piece will be one of the pieces Suhaila will be highlighting at Rakkasah West 2010! I'll be teaching the choreography at her Studio, Sunday 25 October. She's also threatening to turn it into an instructional video! OMG. I still haven't fully processed that last part. I have no idea how I could have fallen into such good fortune. It's the ULTIMATE compliment a belly dance artist could get!!! Suhaila is insanely generous. Thankfully sitting down... I'm still trying to process it all... and completely dumbfound.

Your ears are bleeding from hearing Beats Antique, AGAIN, for the 89th time this weekend... BUT! If you leave before 5:15pm, you gonna miss the most HYPE dance party eva!!! Sit your ass down, or stand, whatever- and watch us! Tribal Fusion Faire

I just came back from a really awesome time at a nice little belly dance festival called Tribal Fusion Faire. It was small enough to have a really cozy atmosphere and big enough to offer some really excellent workshops and see a lot of really quality dancers. I had a blast. I drove down with Meliza, who btw danced with Cynthia (used to be Tribal Feat) on Sunday. They were GREAT! I danced on Saturday and did the same piece that I did for the Hips of Fury competition. That was really nice to do again. I am totally digging dancing at festivals. It is really fun. There was a wild sushi dinner on Saturday night and Sunday entailed a pleasant drive home that even got me back right on time for rehearsal with Damage Control! oooOohOOH... which reminds me to post another blog about performing at SEA OF DREAMS with Damage Control! That is going to be so ***FANTASTIC*** I can't wait! details coming....

Competing is such a weird thing. I won, and it's cool! but really, entering the whole thing wasn't even about winning- it was the challenge of getting it all together. Pulling together a solid & complete package- Seeing if I could handle the stress of a competition. As I was performing- I realized that it was also about getting the respect of other dancers in the community. I didn't really think about that before... Another funny thing... was that I didn't even realize I would get a trophy! and a ca$h prize! That's always nice. For this competition, I think I should have signed up for Ultimate Soloist instead of Tribal Fusion. Next HoF. It's hard to know what to sign up for when you've never competed before. Also, I never cared much for categories. That is, until I *had* to pick one because I needed to properly categorize myself so that I could properly compete. That was interesting. Anyway, I am totally down to do it again! I'm going to do Bellydancer of the Universe in February! The Tribal Fusion category! Yeah! PS! What is the best worst thing that anyone ever called you? I only ask because I recently found my winner- and I am still mulling it over. Only... though... because it is so over the top and truly excellent. It was a family member, of course. Who else can get that pissed off at a person? And hey! who says the Mexican Novelas are overdramatic and not realistic! I find myself living in that world more and more often. Actually, I really didn't even know what I wanted it to be, just the colors and I had all the doodads... and the general vibe of the costume. She made the whole thing, and I can't believe how stunning and flattering it is! This girl has got some serious SKILLS!!! No doubt about it. AHH! It is pretty much here! My first competition... we'll see how it goes. I have no big expectations. I can only do my best and get some hopefully, good quality feedback! I'm totally excited, I don't have that "need to pee right NOW" feeling just yet... but I'm sure I'll have it right before I go on, like I always do!!! Will I be sad if I don't win? Nah. I'm too much of a competition newby. I'm certain that it takes a whole different set of dance skills to learn how to enchant your judges and show them that you are enchanting the audience to get points. Regarding the many other aspects, I am totally stoked! I am stoked about my dance piece. I am STILL stoked on the music and how it's mixed together. I was having some issues using such well known music (that damn Beats Antique!!! It is so good! and everyone uses it!) I'm stoked that I finally nailed down a choreography for myself that is using finger cymbals. I am TOTALLY stoked about my AWESOME new costume that Katherine Summer is creating for me. And I am totally stoked that I am just making myself do this! because, seriously... why the hell not!! The competition is Nov 4th in SoCal! Palmdale to be exact. Musings over Music... wrt Belly Dance

Do you feel like a copy cat if you dance to a song that a popular bellydancer used... say, a tribal BDSS? If you choose to dance to a song they used, do you feel like you have to live up to that quality of dance (especially if you are going to be dancing somewhere where there are other bellydancers)? Do you struggle to ensure your dancing to the song is entirely your own voice and your own musical interpretation? What do you think of dancers that do this? Do you automatically compare their technique and musicality? Or do you appreciate the different musical interpretation? Or... what DO you do?
