The Tao of Tansau

about me
I am a life-long martial artist and love all disciplines that bring awareness and unity to mind, body and spirit. This quest has guided me through studies of Kung Fu, T’ai Chi (Taijiquan) and Aikido, as well as pursuit of arts such as Iaido (way of the sword), Urasenke Chado (way of Tea) and yoga. Now if only I could dance… :-)

I love languages, and this has impacted my passions and my profession. I’ve studied Manderin and Cantonese as well as Mac and PC; Japanese and Java; Arabic and ASP.NET; Spanish and SQL. I don’t believe you can ever stop learning.

My latest experiment is trying to pick apart the technologies of blogging and RSS, combining with AJAX, RoR and various XML/XHTML handling. My goal is to build an effective "Learning Platform" using these emerging technologies that makes online study easy, intuitive and effective.

My latest obsession is rhythmic expression, the doumbek drum and Middle Eastern music.

My Teachers (both direct and indirect): Morihei Ueshiba, Lao Tzu, Peter Ralston, Van Bushnell, Ritsuko Asano, Sen no Rikyu, Jerry Poteet, Richard Ryan, Roger Jarrett, Kevin Blok, Lamar Davis, H. Hockheim, Damian Ray, Grandmaster Shyun Kwon Long, Randy Williams, Augustine Fong, Clark Thornton, Mark Freeman

I didn't want to spam everyone with email, so I thought I'd just slip in a quick link to my new blog: www.karmacool.com/.

Karma Cool is a collection of Cool Things that you can Feel Good about. For the most part.

From Karma, it's about the inevitable results of Action. From Cool, it's about Life, Art, Music, Expression and Technology. It's the intersection where Cool Ideas are put into Real Action.

Quite simply, it's about getting a great deal of Fun out of Life; the kind of t... read more

The culture we live in will often sabotage us. That is because we are in the midst of a "global cooling." Human relations are becoming colder. Communications are becoming more hurried and impersonal. Values such as profit and efficiency are taking on greater importance at the expense of human warmth and genuine presence.
-- Piero Ferrucci, The Power of Kindness

For well you know that it's a fool
Who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder

Try to realize it's all within yourself,
No one else can make you change,
And to see you're really only very small,
And life flows on within you and without you.
-- The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
