2007 Declared 'International Rumi Year'

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), evaluating the Culture and Tourism Ministry’s offer, has decided to commemorate the 800th birthday of Mevlana Jalaladdin-i Rumi, a prominent mystic of Islam, in all member countries.

Turkish Undersecretary of Culture and Tourism, Professor Mustafa Isen announced Tuesday that they presented a proposal to UNESCO suggesting a global celebration in 2007 for Rumi’s 800th birthday.

“Our proposal was responded positively,” Isen said, “So, 2007 was announced as, “International Rumi Year”.

The ministry pays a great deal of attention to the works, and in line with these works, the “Activities Commemorating Rumi” will be performed in Konya, and will be expanded throughout the year and the rest of world.

The International Rumi Association President and Mevlana’s 22nd generation grandchild, Faruk Celebi also said UNESCO’s decision to include Mevlevi culture among world cultural heritages in 2007 is a positive move.

He also noted that they received support from Iran and Afghanistan. Director of Mevlana Center for Research and Practice (SUMAM) at Selcuk University, Associate Professor Nuri Simsekler said, it is an important step in terms of imparting Rumi and Mevlevi culture to the next generation without degeneration.

The First Evening

- She was very much half-dressed
And big indiscreet trees
Threw out their leaves against the pane
Cunningly, and close, quite close.
Sitting half naked in my big chair,
She clasped her hands.
Her small and so delicate feet
Trembled with pleasure on the floor.

- The colour of wax, I watched
A little wild ray of light
Flutter on her smiling lips
And on her breast, - an insect on the rose-bush.

- I kissed her delicate ankles.
She laughed softly and suddenly
A string of clear trills,
A lovely laugh of crystal.

The small feet fled beneath
Her petticoat : "Stop it, do !"
- The first act of daring permitted,
Her laugh pretended to punish me !

- Softly I kissed her eyes,
Trembling beneath my lips, poor things :
- She threw back her fragile head
"Oh ! come now that's going too far !...

Listen, Sir, I have something to say to you..."
- I transferred the rest to her breast
In a kiss which made her laugh
With a kind laugh that was willing...

- She was very much half-dressed
And big indiscreet trees threw
Out their leaves against the pane
Cunningly, and close, quite close.

Hazrat Inayat Khan

I have been introduced to the beautiful messages of this Sufi teacher from India.
Thank you !!!
A Sufi is a religious soul whose nature is to refuse to submit to imposed beliefs, and who is conscious that life is not necessarily just what one might think it to be, nor what one is told it to be. Life is not only lived at the level of physical experience, nor only at the level of thought, nor only at the level of feeling, but also, and most importantly, at a still higher level of consciousness, where the self is no more the barrier separating reality from illusion.
