April 18, 2007I've never met Troy, and I've never written a testimonial for someone I've never met, but he has helped me with chemistry and the peripherals as much as my professors have. Respect.

Does anyone have any experience with crowdfunding? I'm looking for creative ways to fund my PhD research (trying to develop a treatment for methamphetamine addiction (speed), similar in concept to methadone for opiate addiction (morphine and heroin)), but can't afford to continue to spend $500+ a month of my personal money to do so and Federal Research Grants are virtually non-existent.Wed, August 3, 2011 - 12:54 PM permalink - 2 comments

Due to my current adviser's inability to get funding for the project I'm to work on (anti-malaria drug discovery) and the fact that my department is impacted, I need to go elsewhere to finish my chemistry PhD. Since US grad schools won't let someone with a Masters just do their research (basically they require the students to start over), I'm looking at going to the UK to finish my PhD.Wed, September 1, 2010 - 8:21 AM permalink - 0 comments

At group meeting this morning, the professor I'm working with strongly expressed the personal opinion that lives of the poor are worth less the lives of the rich, and that the rich deserve better and faster healthcare then others up to and including lifesaving treatments, like liver transplants. His opinion was immediately echoed by several of the other grad students. Now this all happened while we were discussing patient law, its effect on... read more

So after being in the shop for several weeks (mostly waiting for parts) my car is being totaled. Of course, the insurance company's offer is low by at least $1K from the info I can find on NADA.org and Autotrader.com, so I'll have fun negotiating with them to get a fair price. Joy, not what my broke ass needs to deal with.
This term has been stressful. I make no where near enough money to cover my expenses. I have a prof who is a great lecturer and a real nice guy but his tests are bad: To get full credit, one needs to read the prof's mind (which is one way of defining a trick question). When he explains his approach to the answers he accepts, its clearly reasonable but often not the only reasonable way and that is the problem - he won't accept any approach but his own, ever. Furthermore his questions, where wh... read moreFri, March 12, 2010 - 1:12 AM permalink - 3 comments
