Went for my first shift at the Austin convention centre today, treating people evacuated from New Orleans. The morning started out psycho as new 'Security measures' had been implemented at 2100hrs Sunday. Consequently, everybody was confused and trying to create tonnes of paperwork. Eventually, I was transferred to someone who had some pull and he gave me all the IDs and such. The conference centre was organized chaos with a generally good vibe. Hundreds of volunteers there just to give what they could made my heart go kind of warm and thumpy. Lots of donated good including bizarre over-the-top antibiotics (thanks to drug company silliness). Every patient told me they were being treated well and most were in good spirits. Lots of crazy stories and interesting medical problems. One of the patients had escaped his house underwater,
walked for eighty miles for four days with only one bottle of water, one pack of peanuts and two colts. Dehydrated but at least he had a good smoke. Overall it was a great experience to witness all that human goodwill. It is really amazing what limitless energy and warmth can be found anywhere, not just on the playa. Looks like I'll be there a lot as they are pretty desperate for docs. My sister is down visiting for the week, luckily she is good soul and is going to spend her vacation volunteering with me.

As soon as I left Burning Man I got online to find out where my services could be of help. I am available for 6 weeks, willing to go anywhere, pay my own way, etc. I have extensive emergency and clinical experience and work as a sole MD in a remote community (ten hours by land and sea, 2-4 hours by air, weather permitting) I have been on the phone everyday, online, filling out forms, calling sending paperwork. It is very frustrating to not be able to just go to the front line and dig in. Very typical of everything we have seen with this incident. I only hope that something is learned. I have heard so many examples of willing and able highly skilled workers being ignored, refused, delayed. Monday morning I will do my first shift at the Convention Center doing triage for displaced persons right here in Austin. It was finally my local Medical Association who set me up. Still haven't received a posting from the many medical and relief organizations I have contacted.

Pam says it is like having to stop the goverment from replacing all roofs with titanium to keep the aliens from reading our minds. through the Delkatla Wildlife Sanctuary, in through the forest, past the moss covered cemetery hidden in old spruce woods on to the vast expanse of North Beach. A couple of women had come out in a truck and camper and dug way in to the sand, luckily they had 4x4 and hadn't engaged the hubs, so a quick shift and they were smiling, parking and drinking...
Winnie and I headed out looking over the ocean towards Alaska, she is here for the sticks, putting me through the paces
we run back past the people cozy underground, old spirits (Picea, Abies, Cedrus) all around, Haliaeetus leucocephalus keeps watch Winnie and I keep running.... back home

they were all serious underdogs and they all lost but they were brave warriors and victoria fought a woman 30+ pounds heavier and held her own and more for 15 minute, she's my hero, she is the sweetest thing this side of the Colorado, it's all about consenting adults, you guys understand that, right?

Surprise trip to Portland, Pam has no Idea that she will meet MMA heroes, sweat, choke, CelebroFascination. three days of body bruisin' goodness. Sweet wonderful people training to pummel, hmmm. Afterwards, sweet, sunny Portland, breezin' in the afterglow.
