What's Up, Tigerlily?

New musics

   Tue, January 10, 2006 - 4:18 PM
Jen introduced me to quite a few new bands while I was in St. Croix, as well as MP3s for bands I've heard of but hadn't had a chance to check out.

So, those that I'm positive I like:
Neutral Milk Hotel
Devin the Dude
The Sea and Cake
Jurassic 5

Those that I'm approaching with more caution:
Cat Power
Iron and Wine
Ummm, one other band whose name I can't remember, FUCK

The library has four albums by The Sea and Cake, bless their hearts. Also two John Vanderslice albums, and one OK Go and one Jurassic 5. All of which I've put on hold, mwahaha.

The Sea & Cake - Post-rock for moistening panties.
Jurassic 5 - Single-handedly saved backpacking music in the late '90s.
Cat Power - Psychosis & four track recorders = volatile.
Iron & Wine - The poor man's Palace.
Devin the Dude - neverhearofthem
Neutral Milk Hotel - One of the very few artists who actually make me angry.

sorry.

OOOH! Angry! Do tell, Sizz. Lay it on me, babe. I'll be the first to acknowledge that my musical taste is iffy.

Devin the Dude = hip hop artist. Oeuvres of his have titles like "Come on and Come," all set to bumpin' beats. Funny-ass shit.

Jurassic is a LITTLE too slick for me (productionwise), but they're talented performers and lyricists. Check out Dialated Peoples if you haven't already (Expansion Team is a good one).

My interest in NMH went about as quickly as it came. But I do remember enjoying King of Carrot Flowers I & II.

Jurassic's finest moment is their self-titled ep (released in '97). I'll burn you the version that they released themselves, complete with unapproved Frank Sinatra/Led Zeppelin samples.

Neutral Milk Hotel was HYPED to death in '98-'99. Like, second coming of Jesus hype. I found it to be not deserving of such praise, but such was the state of indie rock in the late '90s that the cardigan set was all okay with loving NMH and everything else on Elephant 6 and ignorning the fact that....oh I'll stop my rant. It's all subjective, anyway.

You should ask Badinia what she thinks of the Aeroplane Over the Sea.

If it makes you feel any better, I like Randy Newman.

1. j5 is overly fabricated. good, but too pretty.

2. iron and wine is the best shit ever. hands down. death cab for cutie fucking blows - take that brandone!

3. cat power is good, but only on disc. saw her live and apparantly she has a fear of live performances. she had all the lights off so you couldn't see her and she had to restart her songs like 10x each. it was annoying as fuck.
