t.h.e.o. is a N-E-R-D

I just saw this years' Scripps National Spelling Bee on ESPN and was completely enthralled. I didn't reach the edge of my seat for the Super Bowl, but I was there for this. Mad props to Katherine Close of New Jersey, who won the title with the correct spelling of the word "ursprache."

First of all, I'm glad that ESPN is covering spelling bees. It may not be "sport" in the conventional sense, but it's as competitive as hell. Secondly, where was all the media coverage when I was kicking ass in regional spelling bees in grade school? If there was an ESPN in those days, I would've been elevated to rock-star status...I'm sure of it! I would've been the only kid taking the podium wearing dark sunglasses and drinking a '40 oz'...with a mullet (all the kids had 'em at the time, I swear!). Thridly, my fears of being the biggest nerd I know was confirmed: I watched this odd, televised event while ordering pizza and drinking beer...

Ursprache
SYLLABICATION: Ur·spra·che
PRONUNCIATION: rshprä
NOUN: See protolanguage.
ETYMOLOGY: German : ur-, original (from Middle High German, out of, from Old High German; see ud- in Appendix I) + Sprache, language, speech (from Middle High German sprche, from Old High German sprhha).

Crossroads...Deja vu

I haven't felt this way since I was 18. It's as if my soul had gone through a time machine. I feel younger, but my memories and experiences are still with me. It's like regressing and porgressing at the same time. I have my innocence back.

I was window shopping yesterday; taking advantage of the beautiful weather and negotiating a melting ice cream cone. The shopkeepers at the Broadway Plaza are rather adamant about keeping their pricey merchandise clean, so I regulated myself and the ice cream to staying outside of the stores, only popping into shops which sold the goods that truly caught my eye. Then something bizzare happened.

I found myself staring not at the display in the window, but at my own reflection in the glass. A strange yet familiar feeling came over me. I've lived this moment before. I remembered being a young man and coming upon the fork in the road of my life. I had to make a decision as to where I wanted my life to go, and that decision was made. Although, I could never help wondering what my life would've been like if I had chosen a different path. I had always thought that all other alternatives were closed to me at this point in my life. It now seems that I am being presented with this choice once again. This is my second chance!

I feel rejuvinated. I never realized how jaded and desensitized I had become. Its been forever since I've felt nervous/scared/anxious about my life. Oh, how I missed those emotions! The excitement of life's adventures are with me once again. I am ready to step into the next eschelon. It is time to live abundantly.

Drunk in Safeway

I have this bad habit of showing up at the local Safeway at ungodly hours, drunk out of my mind. Just last night, I was at a cocktail party and had a few too many. I then became culinarily inspired and found my way to the grocery store. I pulled off yet another disappearing act, prompting that ever popular question, "Where the hell did Theo go?" It was 2 a.m. So there I was, in a pinstriped Yves St. Laurent suit, filling my shopping cart with the ingredients that would become the greatest gourmet salad in American history.

I quickly got to work in the kitchen as soon as I arrived home. I also have a habit of drinking red wine whilst I prepare my meals - it is imperative that I remain drunk during this process. After 30 minutes of toil (seemed more like hours) I stood prouldly over my creation with a bottle of Hogue in one hand, and salad tongs in the other. I tasted the salad. It was a magnificent blend of garnish, foliage and dressing. Perfection. I washed this bite down with a sip of wine and proceeded to the couch - and passed out.

"Make me...Beautiful"

My loving sister Kay bought me the first two seasons of Nip/Tuck on DVD! It is currently my prized possesion. I love this fucking show. Dr. Christian Troy is officially one of my new role models - what a fucking stud. My favorite is the Famke Janssen episode. Anyone wanna snuggle up on the couch and watch with me?

Texas Hold 'Em

Ever been hustled? Well, I recently had the misfortune of being reminded of what it feels like to be played. Here's the story:

I was invited to a poker game by two bartenders (Dan & Matt) whom I befriended by being a regular guest at a certain unnamed fine dining establishment. They looked innocent enough; young and mild-mannered gentlemen. So I accepted their invitation. I felt confident enough to do this through a string of victories in online poker, where I didn't even play with real money. This only set me up for a very rude awakening.

The game took place at Dan's house, and Matt was rather accommodating, asking if I needed liquor, snacks, etc. There were about 8 players in all of both sexes, all of whom were quite friendly. But when it was time to play, the atmosphere took a serious tone. I felt like I was bleeding in a pool full of sharks, and they all went in for the kill. They ran me out of that table, needless to say. I won't even bother telling you how much money I lost. Yep, you guessed it, Dan and Matt were ringers.

This story has somewhat of a happy ending, though. Dan and Matt were kind enough to take me to breakfast at Denny's after the game (or was that more punishment?), and they offered me free lessons on how to elevate my game. What a couple of princes. I think I'm gonna take them up on it, though. I gotta have some game when I get on Celebrity Poker Showdown, after all!

Rainy Days and Birthdays Always Get Me Down...

I love my life. I love being a Scorpio. But every year I come across the day that brings me much sadness - my birthday. Ironic huh? I don't know why, but its always been this way. I have my theories, though. This is the time of year when the weather begins to turn. Its always raining on my birthday, or at least overcast and yucky. I also turned 30 this year. That whole notion is probably fucking with me as well. It also doesn't help that my friends and family are too busy to spend time with me right now; but that's nobody's fault - that's just life.

Don't worry, I'm not playing the complete victim here. Because this too shall pass. It just sucks right now, that's all. I'm usually back to normal by Thanksgiving, when my friends and family are obligated to hang out with me due to national observance of the holiday. Hey, I'll take it any way I can get it.

By the way, for those who are curious - my actual birthday was November 3rd. I was meaning to write this blog on that day, but I've been sleeping a lot lately. Which reminds me - my bed is very cold. I've always managed to not be dating anyone around this time of year. So needless to say, there's no one to warm up my bed in these cold, lonely nights. <sigh>

Okay...wallowing time is over. I want to sleep now. No alarm; cellphone off. See you at Thanksgiving...

I put the 'fantasy' in Fantasy Football

Okay, that was my feeble attempt at making this otherwise nerdy obssession of mine, somewhat sexy. But I am powerless to the abundance of testosterone within me, thus causing me to have an fanatical fervor for sports. Fantasy Football is what's ruling my world at the moment (besides Madden, of course), and I recently joined a leauge comprising of some of the most talented DJs in the Bay Area. Something about football seems to unleash the beast within, as our message boards fill with obscenities towards people's mothers. Not for the sensitive.

But now I feel compelled to predict my Championship in the Sinister Fantasy Football League. Here is my team:

QB: Kerry Collins
WR: Joe Horn
WR: Roy Williams
RB: Cadillac Williams
RB: Clinton Portis
WR/TE: Michael Clayton
K: Nate Kaeding
DEF: Philadelphia

It's In The Game!

I've had my MADDEN 06 on XboX for about two weeks now, and it's completely consuming me (football in general consumes me around this time). I almost want to talk about Fantasy Football, but that's a blog all to itself. Let's focus on Madden for now.

The Vision & Precision is still a bit tricky for me, being that I like to use QBs with smaller vision cones. I'm really excited about learning all the defensive bells and whistles, since I'm a defensive guru when it comes to picking up 'the sticks.'

So far my favorite teams to use have been Baltimore and Kansas City, but I had to give my 49ers some love, so I created a revamped Niner team in my franchise.

I've got an 'ass-whoopin' to hand out, so I'll get with you cats later...
