The Alice Neel Documentary @ The Roxie, SF (events » arts) Friday, January 25, 2008 - 7:00 PM Alice Neel was one of the great portrait painters of the 20th century. She reinvented the genre of portraiture by expressing the inner landscape of her varied sitters, among them Andy Warhol, Annie Sprinkle, Bella Abzug, and Allen Ginsberg. Painting a diverse cross-section of humanity, from Communist Party leaders to art world personalities to her neighbors in Spanish Harlem, Neel created a body of work that serves as a social document of New York and America in the 20th Century. The film will tell the story of Neel's life, exploring the struggles she faced as a woman artist, a single mother, and a painter who defied convention.

The Art Explosion Studios Open House Fall 2008 (events » arts) Thursday, October 16, 2008 - 5:00 PM Art Explosion Open Studios Fall 2008

Art Explosion Studios are home to more than 200 artists in the Mission district. Every fall they gather together to have an open studios art show. When you climb the stairs of the old warehouse that houses the studios you don’t know what to expect. At the top you are met with a bright gallery setting with plenty of free refreshments and some of the best original art being made in the city. These shows are like walking tours with the artists there to give you a first hand explanation of their work while you get a chance to look at their studios and see how the art is made. The art ranges from recent art school graduates through accomplished professional artists with museum quality work. It is a great way to get a feel for what is happening on the front lines of the SF art scene and party with the artists. This event has grown through the years and promises to be the art show to see this fall.
