On the way to Transformus, Spin and I stopped at a gas station for ice. We unloaded enough to get to the empty coolers, filled them with ice, reloaded and took off. While unloading at camp, I asked, "Where is my other cooler? The one with all the cheese and butter for the 72 grilled cheese sandwiches?" Spin said he had noticed an extra cooler in the parking lot near the freezer, but thought it had already been there and wasn't ours. So, I had nine loaves of bread, and nothing to go with it.

While I set up my tent, a campmate walked up, with a couple of girls, asking if I knew where a certain person was, because they heard he might have an extra invite. I didn't know where he was, but through a series of unfortunate incidents and lack of incidents, I had ended up at Transformus as one person with two invites, so I offered my extra. They were very pleased and asked what I wanted for it. I told them, "Two pound of cheese, and two pounds of butter." I gave them the ticket, and they called the incoming person to tell him what to bring. I realized later that I had made a mistake; I actually needed six pounds of cheese, but when he arrived and they found me again, they had brought six pounds of cheese.

The next day, there was plenty of hot gooey goodness at Science Camp. (Thanks to Megan and Wineman for helping cook! ) Despite my ineptitude, the grilled cheese found a way.

It was raining during choir practice today at my place, and the power went out for a long time. While I started a fire in the fireplace, we drank vanilla vodka and sang by flashlight. Then, the power returned, and we watched "Shaun of the Dead," which is an excellent zombie movie. After everyone left, as I reached to turn on the radio, I half expected silence or emergency tones. I was relieved to find that we were not in the midst of the apocalypse.

Yay!

However, that means I have to go to work tomorrow.

You can get anything you want, at Alice's Restaurant (Except for Alice)

And the only reason I'm posting this now is cause you may know somebody in a similar situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if you're in a situation like that there's only one thing you can do and that's go to your blog, where ever you are, just log in and type "You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.". And log out. You know, if one person, just one person does it the readers may think he's really sick and will unfriend him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony, they may think they're both queer and will ignore them. And three people , three, can you imagine, three people logging in, posting a bar of Alice's Restaurant and logging out. The readers may think it's an organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day, I said fifty people a day logging in, posting a bar of Alice's Restaurant and logging out. And friends, they may think it's a movement.

And that's what it is, the Alice's Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and all you got to do to join is post it the next time you're on the internet.

NY Decom 2007

I just figured out why this year's Decom felt so much smaller than last year. I didn't explore enough to find it all; I missed whole rooms, such as wherever Abject was doing posed photos. I saw Kostume Kult, the dance floor, the big model of NYC, the bar, the balcony above the dance floor, the massage room, the outside. I don't know what else I missed.

I did an experimental activity, which was trying to find people in my pictures from last year, and giving them prints. I only found two, but it was more about the search than the finding. I met people during the search and might find some of the subjects online, with the names I received.

I only took a few photos this year, at the dance floor. They are at http://www.lincecumphoto.com/gallery/3774163

Perhaps next time, if I take photos, I'll deliver tiny prints from a small battery powered printer, with the URL of their future web address. I'm working toward more interactivity and immediacy, but there are many avenues toward those goals, and many of my ideas don't involve photography.

LESS anonymity than Burning man due to fewer people.
LESS time in transit between camps than Burning Man due to less space.
LESS distance between default world homes of me and others, on average, compared to Burning Man.
LESS planned activities with people I already see regularly, compared to previous PDFs.
LESS infrastructure at my own camp, such as common area with shade structure.
LESS production of minimally interactive art, whether photography, performance or other.

MORE interaction, both in their camps and walking around, with people I didn't know well, but now know better, and expect to see again.

After years of photojournalistic photography, I'm starting to get interested in portraiture. However, studio portraiture would be too big of a jump. I'm going to try environmental portraiture. It's different from studio portraiture in that it features a place, and usually an activity, which say something about the subject. It's different from photojournalism in that it's more about a person than an event, and it's all in one image, rather than a series, generally.

I admire the work of Caroline Shepard, http://www.carolineshepard.com/
The image above is hers. I'm not sure how she achieves some of her effects, but I've got a good idea, so I'm going to try it.
For more conventional examples, search for 'environmental portrait' in Flickr http://flickr.com/ or Google Images http://images.google.com/

Stay tuned for my first efforts.

This is part of an evening of experimental photos, testing what I could do with my new 5D at night without flash. I was inspired by Doug Sanford's low light photos, and I had the same camera, so I abandoned my old habit of using flash under such conditions with lesser cameras. The light was so low that I could barely see what I was photographing, and I could actually see the subjects better by viewing the camera's LCD after taking a photo. I was impressed with what it could do. My envelope has expanded.

Journey to BM07 - Prism Glasses

These glasses allow you to read while laying flat by reflecting light ninety degrees. By wearing them upside down, you can see what is behind you (toward the top of your head), but the image is upside down. I noticed that watching a landscape go by from a moving vehicle, the close region slides by quickly, the middle region moves slower, and far region seems barely to move. The regions look distinct, like in a video game. It's surreal. Even though it seems normal right side up, the new perspective allows us to see details we may have previously overlooked.
