Native Americans: An Evaluation of Tribal Economic Development and Its Impact on Housing in Four Case Studies

In Sustaining Indian Housing: An Evaluation of Tribal Economic Development and Its Impact on Housing in Four Case Studies (96 pages, PDF), the National American Indian Housing Council, analyzed four tribal communities around the United States to determine the relationship between economic development and tribal housing conditions. NAIHC discovered that although economic development on tribal lands produces much needed jobs, the salary increases and higher tax brackets disqualify tribal jobholders from federal housing assistance programs. On the other hand, greater income enables tribal members to qualify for conventional financing for home mortgages and encourages banks to do business with tribes. But even with more jobs and financing opportunities, overcrowding and outdated living quarters still plague tribal communities, and housing conditions tend to improve at a slower rate.

Milwaukee Art Museum

May 4, 2001, marked the initial unveiling of the Milwaukee Art Museum's new expansion and renovation which combines art, dramatic architecture and landscape design. Our new Quadracci Pavilion, the first Santiago Calatrava-designed building in the United States, features a 90-foot high glass-walled reception hall enclosed by the Burke Brise Soleil, a sunscreen that can be raised or lowered creating a unique moving sculpture.

The Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion, the first Calatrava-designed building to be completed in the United States, first opened to the public May 4, 2001.
