When one forges a campfire tripod one is really compelled to create a cauldron for that tripod. So naturally that is what I've done.
The body:
16ga mild steel sheet, cut with electric shear. cold formed. drilled and riveted with mild steel rivets.
The hanger loops:
3/16in round mild steel bar wrapped around a bar to shape the ends heated with a propane torch and hammered flattish then drilled and riveted.

Well the metal shop had the 3/8 bar stock in stock today. Hooray! I've been able to finish my tripod. Making the ring which holds the three legs and the pot hangar together was neat. In fact doing all of the making of the tripod was fun. I did make a small modification to the forge though. I poked a small (about 1 inch ) hole through the back of it so I could heat up the middle of the bar. The tripod was actually a very good starter piece. Since long before I joined the SCA, I have liked the blacksmith. I also like making things, this in large part why I chose the byname of smith. At my first Pennsic I took a class in blacksmithing and loved it. There is something very magical in the process of heating cold lifeless metal until it glows and comes to life. Taking a hammer and shaping the metal to your will is an incredibly satisfying process. While forging metal I feel a connection to all of the smiths back through the ages.
