Blah, blah, blah.............

Well, that was a gas

There's been a lot of construction around the shopping center where I work. Most of it has just been a nagging inconvenience, but today, it got kinda serious. Apparantly, while the workers were digging a hole, they hit a gas main. Since it was right next door to us, security evacuated our store and told us to stay out, and well clear of the building for at least 2 hours.
Only problem, was we had 7 customer's dogs in the grooming room, and I was not about to leave them behind. My manager kept telling me to leave the dogs and leave the building, but I refused. I called all the owners and arranged to have the dogs picked up, while also trying to arrange kennel cabs for them so we could take them out of the shop.
Fortunately, they got the line capped very quickly, and security allowed us in without having to wait the 2 hour time period they originally mandated. The store manager had a time of it trying to call his other employees back in. All in all ithe whole ordeal took about 40 minutes, and wound up costing me half a days wages, cause half my dogs went home.
I guess I should look on the bright side...at least I didn't make the 5 o'clock news tonight as a crispy critter.

Well, kudos to you for thinking of the safety of those dogs. They are really in good hands with you. I am glad none of y'all was hurt.

I'm with Georgiane
Huge kudos to you for refusing to leave the dogs behind! I can't help but think that your boss should be praising you up and down for your consideration, and I would hope all the families you called were appreciative!!

I had a passing thought to call the local paper and tell them! Good human interest!

Ugh! No, please just let that thought pass. I have absolutely no desire to be featured in the media. I hate the smarmy little bastards and would probably wind up being exptemely rude to them, and they would then do a horrific piece, making me out to be some complete Gumby who shouldn't even be working in the public.
Actually, this was a wake-up call for me, because it made me realize that we need to set up a disaster plan in case anything like this happens again. Fortunately, my new manager believes in store meetings so I can raise this issue, unfortunately, this company has really gone downhill in the last few years, and most likely none of my suggestions will actually be implemented. They've cut payroll practically in half and are asking so much from what little staff they have, and just aren't compensating them properly for all they are asking and it's burning out their employees.
I will, however make sure that my own department has a comprehensive plan, cause I don't like hanging around places that might go "BOOM!".

I knew you'd feel that way, so I did let the thought pass! A disaster plan for your own shop should be doable, even without funds or extra staff. Just be sure everyone knows how to get the animals out in case of an emergency and be sure someone has the phone numbers of the customers and a cell phone.
