Why Sam? Why?

   Mon, January 19, 2009 - 11:49 PM
Our esteemed and very cute little chicken farmer mayor Sam Adams has been caught with his dirty little fingers in the cookie pot.

personally, what bothers me about this situation is that he
fully knowing that he was being observed at all times and
realizing that he would be casting himself as a role model for gay people everywhere
was Stupid enough to let other people see that he was schtuping someone who -was working for him -was less than half his age

and then in lying about it afterwards (duh) he gave an important portland city job to some dipshit trashy reporter from the Mercury.

WHY?

I mean, I do understand that he felt this immense pressure when he got caught initially to deny it. But really the lack of self control from that point forward in his continued contact with the kid, is just embarrassing.

this makes me sad on so many levels.

(ed. the more I think about this, the less I think any of the media options that we have in portland ESPECIALLY Willamette Week, Oregonian, KGW, KOIN, FOX...are going to give us the TRUTH, as opposed to some hyperdrama inflammatory bullshit, as they are want to do)

Wait,
what happened? I'm so far out of it! Can you give me a run down? I'll look into it in the meanwhile... <3

our politicians are human beyond measure
sadly, there's just no getting around it.

Humans are politicians by nature
<cynic>
I'm sorry you are sad but it should not come as a surprise, everyone lies - especially politicians, even cute ones.

not surprised
I am not naive, I don't fault him for his sexual impulses whatsoever.

What makes me sad is that he would be so stupid about it when he knows how important his position -on the national stage as the first openly gay mayor- is.

Why oh why do politicians still think that they are above telling the truth? Didn't they learn anything from Clinton, Packwood, Spitzer, and Goldschmidt?

This whole situation just makes me sad. I voted for this man because I thought that here was a guy who came up from nowhere, worked his way up the ladders at City Hall, paid his dues, that he had the best interests of the city of Portland at heart. Now I feel as though all he cared about was his own agenda, getting into office even if he had to lie to get there. Who Sam Adams has sex with is none of my business. He's certainly not the first middle-aged man to have his head turned by an attractive teenager, and he won't be the last. But for God's sake, why couldn't he have just have just been honest, just told people that the young man was of legal age and it's nobody else's business? Is his ego really so enormous that he actually thought he'd never be found out?
Unsu...

I hear you. It's the stupidity that irritates me.

Yeah maybe we should just stay out of the sex lives of politicians?
Who cares who they do in bathrooms or what consenting staffer they are boffing.

"Yeah maybe we should just stay out of the sex lives of politicians?

Weeeeelllll.... Antiquated or not (I sort of lean toward not) we still tend to see boffing a barely-legal intern half yr age as rather poor form & quite possibly an abuse of power. I'm not saying an 18 yr old is incapable of consent, but the power dynamics in this exact sort of situation make consent... tricky. And given the fishbowl Adams was in, as Tineke so rightly says, he might have kept a hold on his impulses, when so much is at stake. Basic integrity & leadership, really.

But if his stand is that it's perfectly fine & none of his constituency's business, then he should have taken the hit when it was revealed. Instead of giving ammunition to every nasty homo stereotype. Disappointing for sure. Wonder how his boyfriend is feeling about all this kerfuffle?

middle aged but powerful
vs. young and beautiful and wide eyed.

I don't know if the power balance is really so easy to determine....

maybe you should be a little older and wiser at 42 and prepping to run for mayor, but when it comes to matters of the heart, I don't think it can be so simple as to say that Beau was younger and therefore a victim.

Personally I know that in this situation it in none of MY business, but I think people at 18 are more capable than older folks give them credit for.

I can't make a very impassioned argument, cuz I also agree that the power balance is hard to determine. But human resources protocals might suggest that on the CHANCE that there is a power differential - if not because of the age difference then at least due to the work environment - is considered by many to be a reason for caution. And honestly, it isn't the absolute rightness or wrongness that is my point, but community standards of rightness & wrongness. Fair or not, the need to acknowledge public norms & perception does come with a life of public service, especially if your very existence in a certain office is politicized.

Like I said, maybe he believed that there was no reason to hesitate - if that is his position, I would have loved to see him stand by it when the press came round.

But, seems he's standing by it now. And I don't want to lose him, so I'm glad for that.

It's not about age, it's not about gay, it's about telling the truth. If this involved two consenting adults, fine, that's no one else's business. But to lie, and to lie repeatedly? And to give a city job to the reporter who originally broke the story? That's what's unacceptable to me.

selling the story
they sold that story on the sex scandal
then justified breaking it by adding this conjecture about this woman being hired as a perk for hushing up about what she knew

but is that what happened?
is there proof of that?

I don't know what to think about this anymore.
fucking media. you know you can't trust them either.
