We completed our delivery to SunPower's ( http://www.sunpowercorp.com ) new digs in Richmond, the tables, stools and benches we designed and made for them.

All the furniture has custom colored pieces that match their company colors.

And everything is made with FSC certified maple, and color dyed with water based pigments.

All the furniture was shipped in flat, and slots together easily with a rubber mallet.

We finished putting together the benches:

The Stools:

And both styles of small tables.... 40 tables in all.

Another cool part of this project was designing and facilitating the production of these 20ft long benches made out of reclaimed wood from the building they went back into.

Here is a photo of the wood on the site, recently pulled from the building, and as it was originally shown to us:

And here are the benches we had made from that wood, in their final home:

Pretty cool, huh?

We worked with a company here in Oakland called Joinery Structures, http://www.joinerystructures.com/

They have an enormous shop that is able to deal with wood of this size.

They hauled the material back to their shop, milled off the weathered exterior of the wood to reveal beautiful fir beneath,

and then delivered them to the site in Richmond.

We then had to fit them through this tiny opening to get them on the second floor. That sure was fun!

We saw them on desks. We saw them on lawns. We even saw them on a car. But by far the best was still the one where it was taped to a rock in the wilds of remote Australia:

Wilds of the outback!

A big thanks goes out to Clinton & Meech, who will be receiving a real Squirrel Table of their very own shortly (well, shortly being how long it takes to get to the outback)!

Thanks everyone for the pictures!

We are about wrapping up a large custom furniture and design project for SunPower (http://www.sunpowercorp.com) who is moving into a new building in Richmond CA.

Actually it's an old building. They are re-inhabiting the old Ford building, right on the water near the docks of Richmond. It is a beautiful location, and a beautiful building!

Here's a photo of the second floor, when the construction was just beginning....

IMG_0400.JPG

We were contacted by Sunpower to help them solve design issues for their interior space, create custom designs for furniture systems they could use in the office, and just be over all "go to" people on how to get things made, who to talk to, and the best method of approach to see ideas through. It was a great all encompassing project.

The ideas behind the furniture system we designed all came from the project of building out the interior space. While walking the construction site with SunPower, we saw all the flat-pack style tables the construction crew had set up.

Like this table:

The designers at SunPower liked them so much, we decided to base the furniture system around that style. But alter it a bit for more of an office environment.

Here is our version of that table...

IMG_2466_2.jpg

The legs have been modified to more easily sit around it, all the edges have been rounded, and a splash of color has been thrown in to add some fun. The table slots together, and no screws are needed to put it together and keep it stable. The slotting effect allows the color from the leg to come through to the table surface, adding a very graphic and bold splash of interest.

We made a bunch of tables, each with it's own accent color:

Once the large table was designed, we designed stools and benches to match. All using the same slotting technique, with no screws for the assembly.

All the furniture went together quickly, and easily.

And the stools are so cute!

We even amazed our client by fabricating an extra table in an emergency within hours.

Or client had another vendor fall through, and the last table they desperately needed that day was not going to arrive in time. We saw the need and told them we could make them a table that day. We drove from the Richmond building back to our shop, bought some pre-finished euro-ply and threw it on the ShopBot.

The client had even asked to make some design changes to the table, so it could be larger and more of an oval shape.

We got the cutting files ready, turned on the machine and started cutting.

The whole table probably took a little more than half an hour to cut....

IMG_2482.JPG

A little over half an hour to sand all the edges,

IMG_2481.JPG

And about a half an hour to oil the unfinished edges.

IMG_2484.JPG

Then the table was done!

IMG_2490.JPG

And we were back in Richmond with the desired table within a few hours.

The client was psyched.

If you follow the Evil Mad Scientist blog, then you already know that these new black boards for the interactive LEDs are the coolest.

But we had yet to see them in person until very recently when we finished out latest table order. And I must say.. those black boards are smashing!!

IMG_2358.JPG

Unfortunately we did not get a photo of these boards in action.

This one was all green lights, just brilliant really. BRILLIANT.

I mean really. It was quite bright.

You may have also noticed that our LED tables are currently "Sold Out".

We have done this to prevent more orders from coming in while we re-design these tables.

We hope to have them up again in their new full glory come Feb 1st.

At that time we will offer modified versions of these tables, and also more simple table that is a bit less expensive.

Hope to see you at the store then!

The San Francisco Cannery does a food drive every year, and this year they approached us to make a tree that would be their "Giving - Tree", filled with canned goods that are being donated to the food drive.

IMG_2351.JPG

We designed the tree to have huge shelves on it to hold all the cans, and to easily slot together and come apart for future use.

The design is fun and whimsical to attract people to look at it, and then hopefully noticing the food drive as well.

IMG_2385.JPG

The tree held 300 cans on it's shelves.

There was a small ceremony for the 'unveiling' of the tree, and we were asked to get up and speak. This was the first time we have been asked to present a piece, and it was an honor to do so, even though it was a very small job.

And then a Kwanza band played and danced in front of the tree.
