yay new logo.
yay old colors.
yay no board of directors and evil CEO.
yay back in the hands of it's creators.

so, will it be yay no censorship?
yay no TOU wonkery?
yay tribe can still stay afloat?

i certainly hope so. one of the great things about tribe back in the day was that it was a place where the users pretty much had free reign, and I liked that. it felt much more like a place where you could get to know the people who were building the site as well as the other people using it, and for a short time, it seemed like they were actually listening to us. then came the board of directors take over, which i would still like more details on, and it was pretty clear that Tribe had stopped listening. something/someone else was at the helm, and they drove Tribe to a weird, weird place. weird in a bad way. i want it to go back to being weird in a good way. that is, a place where weird isn't forced under the rug to be ignored. it doesn't have to be the main focus of the site or anything, but allowing it to co-exist equally is pretty significant in my book. hopefully pincus has good plans in store, and i await paitently to hear them.

TomBlog: Your Tribe acquisition news source

http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/07/07/nbc-will-buy-tribenet/

Interesting article. While it does not confirm that it is a done deal, it does confirm that the deal is not just a rumor, and that Tribe and NBC are in talks. For what? According to the Clickz story link to from TechCrunch:

"the company is looking at Tribe's back-end technology for possible integration with its digital properties, which include iVillage, MSNBC.com, and Telemundo.com [...] According to the source, NBC also is evaluating other social networking site technologies."

Looking at just the backend technology hints at a cut-up redistribution of resources deal rather than a takeover of operations. But, the story also hints at the fact that there could be no acquisition at all. The waiting game continues...

hello again. i thought i would mention that if you are interested, i can get youz guyz starter level invites for Vox.com.

Vox is the newest "social blogging" site from Six Apart, the makers of MovableType, Typepad and LiveJournal. It's still in beta right now so they are not offering the whole enchilada to everyone just yet, but they have been upgrading starter accounts to full accounts as they process advances along (that's how I got my full account). They let you post photos, audio, video as well as blgo entries and let you set different levels of privacy, so you can make blog posts visible to friends, family, or everyone. I trust the guys who run this site because they are friends of friends, and some of them have been bloggers since before the term was invented. I am not promoting this because I am getting paid or reimbursed in any other way, just because it looks like a site that has real potential... and it would be nice to have more friends on the site.

If you are interested in a starter level account, which will let you set up a profile and add friends, and comment on posts, PM me your email address and I can set you up.

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands, and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of the war."

Want to fix the new Tribe layout?

You can at least get rid of the bubbles pretty easily. Follow these directions:

Download this: http://www.straightnochaser.org/goodies/userContent.css
and save it in your firefox profile's chrome directory, which this page can help you find: http://www.squarefree.com/userstyles/user-style-sheets.html

shut down firefox and restart. your tribe page should look much better now!
the only thing is that the "home" link goes to http://tribe.net/local instead of http://tribe.net/home, like it should. in order to fix that you need to have greasemoney for firefox installed. you can get that here: http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/

once you have greasemonkey installed, you can then load this user script (click the install button that should appear in the upper right-hand corner):
http://straightnochaser.org/goodies/mytribe.user.js

This should change that link for you. let me know if you need help!

but the site is easier to use. the discussion threads are easier to read. the ads are less intrusive. i personally would like a different color scheme, but that is secondary. as a front-end web developer, i give the new layout a thumbs up for usability alone.

edit: i'm working on a way to make the main nav a little less bubbly, so stay tuned. yay user stylesheets.

I am a Gangster!

So, me and Marty went to this party in Oakland tonight. It was fine, saw an old friend and drank some beers, no problem. On the way back, we decide to go back through the Mission and grab a bite to eat and a final beer. A slice at Cable Car Pizza and a beer at Kilowatt later, and we are good to go. As we walk by the corner at 16th and Guerrero, Marty sees some girl hanging out in a doorway with this big, drunken, shit-eating grin on her face, so he shouts out, "hey! enough smiling over there! no smiling allowed!", which I think is funny, so I bellow, "NO FUCKING SMILING GODDAMMIT!", to which I swear she giggled.

So we are deep in drunken guffaws on the corner, waiting for the light to change, when we hear behind us, "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU SAY TO MY GIRLFRIEND?!".

I turn around to see some skinny asian kid, *maybe* in his early twenties, looking very, very angry with me. He sports the emo sweater pulled over the crisp linen button down shirt, but with light smeared MIME make-up all over his sad, angry face (I shit you not).

I can't take this seriously, so I smirk and am all still with the sillyness and joking, "I SAID NO SMILING".

He is not pleased! He gets all in my face, "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU SAY, MOTHERFUCKER?! FUCK YOU!".

Still, this is painfully funny, but I recognize a dangerous drunken twit when I see one. "Nothing, dude! Really, nothing. You need to calm down."

He is not having it, all of his emo rage bubbling to the surface, ready to explode. He shoves, he grabbes for my shirt. I keep him at bay with an extended arm. His girlfriend looks _horrified_.

"FUCK YOU, I DON'T NEED TO CALM DOWN, YOU NEED TO SHUT THE FUCK UP."

Woah. I can only respond with a confused, "uh, no thanks, guy", which doesn't seem to register much. A supposed friend of his in black rimmed glasses rushes over and puts his arms between us, "Hey! Easy GANGSTER, just take it easy, OK?"

Woah, what? Gangster?! Wow. These guys need to go straight back to Hayward or where ever they came from. Gangster. I am wearing a Speakeasy Brewery hoodie under a brown Dickies jacket, with a Blogger hat on. A BLOGGER HAT.

SO.

FUCKING.

GANGSTER.

This confuses me so much, that I can't say anything other than, "gangster? gangster?! um... no?"

Glasses boy extends a hand, "just leave it alone. are we cool?".

Me: "Um, not really."

Emo boy: "FUUUUCK YOU!!!"

Marty: %^O

Glasses boy: "Ok, bye. just bye.", pushes his party backwards along 16th street.

Oh wow. Really, wow. I would have been pissed if it was some jock with a marina girl, getting all dick-ish, but some emo boy IN MIME MAKEUP throwing shit? Comedy! AND THEN I ATTAIN GANGSTER STATUS! HOLY SHIT!

Friends, comrades, I want you to remember this, for tonight I am no longer the mild-mannered drunk you once knew: I AM A GANGSTER. NO FUCKING SMILING ALLOWED.

I actually did a solid 8 hours of work today for the first time in a couple of months. Like, real all day stuff, not slacking a bunch and then pretending to work a bit, but solid sitting down and coding all day. It was glorious. No one bothered me, no one was rushing me, all I did was churn away. And when I got home today, I felt totally refreshed, mostly because I was actually using my brain all day. and now marty just called as is going to buy me a beer. woot! banner day!
