I'm a jack-of-all-trades technologist with a hedonistic streak and a dash of mischievousness. I'm a dedicated DIYer, which basically means I try to fix the broken shit in my life (usually vehicles and computers) and doing what I can with what I have. It's fun, it's aggravating, it's difficult, tedious, and rewarding. Caffeine helps a _lot_.
I like living a project-based lifestyle, rarely doing the same kind of work for more than a few years. I try to balance projects for the greater good with hedonistic personal projects like mobile hot tubbing, as too much of either can be tedious. The past 2 years I've been mostly underemployed and doing a number of far-flung projects, but as of November, I'm working a full-time telecommute contract. It's not exciting stuff, but I need get some money in the bank again so I can fund more of my own projects. My current personal project is a mobile hot tub, a truck with a big stainless steel tub and on-board shower, road-legal and drivable from inside the tub. Read more and see pics at dtub dot org. Now that I have a job to buy the parts to finish it, I hope to have it hot by this spring. I recently started blogging about energy & politics over at tommccarty dot com/blog, but not very often or regularly.

Oh, I dunno.. how about bleach my hair? Yep, I'm blond again, as of a few days ago. La dee da dee dah, I feel like I lost a few IQ points and gained an excuse to do silly stuff. Funny, I know it's all in my head, but it's still real.

Nice things that Tom does:
(1) He notices the scraping or the banging or the sticking or the drooping and he fixes it up. (2) He stays after everyone has left and drives around looking for trash and puts it in his truck. (3) He cooks you hot food when your too cold and cracked out to tear open the tasty bite bag on your own. (4)He makes pretty flames, large and small. (5)He tells you good books to read. (6)He thinks about tea and devises the optimal brewing strategy. (7)He reads the FAS website and explains the story behind all the shocking things you've been wondering about or didn't even know about. (8) He carries yummy single malt with him. It is in a shiny silvery flask and he doesn't mind if you sip it dry. (9) He brings hot soaking goodnes to the cold far-reaches of the earth and to your very own back yard, tub to door service. (10) He finds cool music and video clips and plays them for you at just the right time. He finds cool news paper articles and reads them out loud to you. (11) He likes to learn about the world and teach himself how to do new things and form his own opinions. (12) He gets up out of bed in the middle of the night to hunt down the mosquito that tried to bite you. (13) He takes off all his clothes to leap though the darkness and light it up with whirling, flying, firery feats. (14) He listen to the sky and the wind and the water. (15) He lies still with his eyes close. (16) He holds on tight.
