Moving on...tribal style!
Sun, October 29, 2006 - 2:04 PMMy new target (or goal rather) is to try my hand/hips at tribal fusion. I'm supposed to take my first class this Thursday night. I feel like a beginner all over again!
I hope that my 2 years of Cabaret were not a loss....;)

The Right Move
Tonda: You're doing the right thing. Belly dancing is traditionally done by women with some meat on their bones, so I was surprised that your 'instructor' was dissing you so much. Now getcha ass out there and show her that her narrow-minded decision was ill-conceived.

Hey Tonda! Who are you going to be studying with in Knoxville?
I love tribal fusion and can't imagine doing anything else... there's just so much freedom. And I envy your background in cab. I started in a tribal format, though with lots of cab influence, but I wish I had a solid foundation in the more 'traditional' stuff. I think you'll find that your cab experience will help you in lots of ways. Good luck, and welcome! |

i actually think a cabaret background is very useful, after all Tribal style did come out of cabaret style just a modified version of it with some additions. The basics are the same, the posture is different and so are the names of some moves, but it's a lot of fun.

I agree w/Kathryn. Having a cabaret background really helped me when I started taking tribal classes. It's odd how it's so similar but yet so different.
I get good things out of both styles, although sometimes I feel a bit constricted doing tribal with a group. I'm used to dancing all over the place and "doing my own thing." On the other hand, I love the link and the energy that goes on between a group fo dancers like that. I've been asked several times which one I like best, cabaret or tribal, and for the life of me I don't have an answer. I love both of them! :) Good luck, Tonda, I think you'll really love it. I'm not sure what your instructor was telling you, but there is room for all of us in this dance, voluptuous goddesses and willowy goddesses. :) Let us know how you like your new class. :) |

You know what is interesting......my cabaret has really improved since I left my original studio (cabaret) and started ATS/tribal fusion. I don't take it for granted since I'm not in cabaret classes anymore. You may not be in cab classes, but you also may not end up dropping it all together.
You may have a challenge getting some of the muscle memory to switch, but it's a good challenge. Your cab basics will ensure that you move along quickly....you already have muscle control and dance discipline other newbies don't!!! Have fun! |

Cabaret will most definately help you with your journey into the fusion realm. I find that most of the top dancers in fusion have cab backgrounds, and tribal helped them evolve into what they are now. All you are doing is adding to your body's knowledge of dance. It gives you more tricks in your bag, to forth the new freedom you will experience through fusion.
Have fun with it, you are blessed with your cab training. Too many dont have that gift. |

Actually your cabaret background will probably help you come up with your own tribal combos. Since in Cabaret, you mostly do choreographies y ou end up creating more combos that you work with for a song. If you started out in Tribal, it's somewhat more limiting since you are learning set combos.
That's part of why I'm into Tribal Fusion now. I l ike the versitility of Cabaret, but I love the look and feel of tribal. |
