Red Tailed Hawk Totem

   Tue, February 27, 2007 - 6:37 PM
This amazing creature has been a fairly regular sight for the past five years. However today it was as thought this beautiful totem was commanding my attention. My path was crossed by the Red Tailed Hawk as I left for work this morning and again as I returned home this evening. The first one was a younger bird that only had a slight amount of red marking the tail feathers. The one the evening was huge and an awesome example of the mature and noble looking creature. Today my mind has been on higher lessons that I have learned throughout my life and reflection on how some of these lessons are currently being tested as I walk my path. So, when my path was once again crossed by my friend the Red Tailed Hawk on the way home, I decided to research the totem to see how it might reflect upon spiritual issues and opportunities that are currently presenting them self within my life. The message of the powerful totem was so profound that I thought I would share what I found.

The red tailed hawk carries the roll of visionary and messenger. This honorable totem brings the lesson of discovering dormant abilities and helps us to see the big picture. It is a symbol of illumination and peace. This special friend offers a path to channel direct contact with hidden wisdoms and insights. It further teaches us to be very observant of these insights and wisdom, the treasures offered by Red Tailed are sacred and of a higher calling. We are asked to show precision and a sharp mind in our hunt for wisdom along our path. When the Red Hawk Soul is then operating from such Higher Intent, these are the natural born investigators, psychics, attorneys and observers that deploy their acumen for insight and direct speech in a constructive, rather than destructive, manner

Red Tailed Hawk’s Power is further represented by the beautiful red color that comes with maturity. This is our reminder that wisdom takes time and is not something that is given, the wisdom of Red Tailed Hawk is something that must be earned. Red represents Power, Energy, and the Kundalini. The Kundalini is the Force that directs the flow of all other energy fields within the physical body. This Force lies dormant within each of us when we take up the ~Robe of Physical Life, and is thought to lie coiled at the ~base chakra~ (located near the base of the spine) and referred to as the ~Serpent Power. ~ There the Power lies sleeping until it is awakened via the Soul who begins the journey on the road of spiritual discovery and who is consciously acknowledging and incorporating their Life Lessons.

Red Tailed Hawk will soar beside the Two-Legged whose own gift of psychic vision may be exceptionally acute. This may take the form of precognitive dreams and/or ~visions~ during which these souls are quite literally able to "see the future."

If the gift of vision is not present from birth, then there will exist within the Red Hawk soul, the ability to pierce the veil that separates falsehood from truth. They will also possess an intensive gaze that can leave those who might find themselves the object of such a gaze, squirming under the penetrating stare.

Equally, Red Tailed Hawk individual, will have the ability to view the broad picture, in much the same fashion that a Hawk can gain a wide view of their surroundings while soaring on the unseen currents of wind as they ride the sky. The human counterpart will be a believer in the philosophy that all things happen for a reason, and it will be this awareness of the ~Big Picture, ~ that will assist both themselves, and those whom they share their gift of keen insight with, through many a difficult time.

In the following quote, Chief Seattle eloquently expresses the concept of Guardianship. "What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected.

You must teach the children that the ground beneath their feet is the ashes of your grandfathers. So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the earth is our mother.

Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth. If men spit upon the ground, they spit upon themselves. This we know, the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth.“ ~Chief Seattle~

Red Tailed Hawk Affirmation Card: I am healed and empowered through my visions. My life moves forward.

In the Celtic tradition Hawk empowers a person to seek out their ancestral roots and to examine in depth that which is positive so that it may be integrated into the person's life and that, which is limiting so it can be released. Tradition is only worth honoring when it supports joy and fulfillment in one's life! In this tradition Hawk also supports the solar side as stated above, helping a person to move forward in life and to seek out great quests to embark upon.

In the Egyptian Tradition Hawk was associated with Magic and shape shifting. Isis is said to have shape shifted into a Hawk to save Osiris. Horus also carried Hawk medicine which allowed him to see the "unseeable".

Among Native American traditions, Hawk served the role of Mercury, bringer of messages and portents of change. Hawk reminded the people they needed to be awake and aware.

As we each strive to grow and change in new directions, we are reminded of the lesson of the many spokes on the wheel of Life. Each of us will stand on every spoke of the Medicine Wheel. At some time or other we will all walk on similar trails through the forest. The time for hierarchy is over; every man, woman, and child on this planet is a Medicine Person. It makes no difference who or what we are, what training we have had, or what race we come from. If we would all use our healing abilities to heal the inner conflicts in our lives, we would have the right to use that Medicine to assist others. All humans have been given the mission of healing him or her self. The inner peace of self-healing can restore our Sacred Space and that of All Our Relations. In accomplishing this common goal we will bring world peace into reality.

My heart felt THANKS to my noble friend the Red Tailed Hawk, for being so persistent in his effort to provide me with a sign and show me these points of wisdom today

If anyone should have additional insights to add, I would truly appreciate the offering. I know this is a little wordy and holds the views of several different sources. However, at the moment I feel a bit like a sponge and prefer to supplyy myself with an abundance of input in order to allow myself to absorb all that is offered.

Many a hawk I have seen
Over the past year or so, I have seen many hawks. Whether it is only because I have become more aware, or because they have increased in population, or that they are coming to me with a message. It matters not, for they are there and have caught my attention. Often times, I will be driving along and see a number of them flying over the fields. One time, I saw eight at once. Last week as I was driving down the highway, one swooped down low just barely over my car and almost being clipped by the car in the high speed lane. He came down hard and fast and within inches of the other car only to swoop up ever so lightly and land on a barren tree in the median. I held my breath as he crossed over, I was poised to pull over so as to effect a rescue if need be when I saw him clear the other car. I breathed a sigh of relief. I then questioned myself. What nutcase would try to race across four lanes of rush hour traffic to save a bird? Yet, that was my first instinct. Somehow, I have grown attached to the hawk. I love to watch them soar overhead. I have seen them come to rest on the ground on the side of the highway as I drive by, appearing to stare at me. What is it they are trying to tell me?

Over a four day period, at different times, different roads, I had two fly from out of nowhere, turning on its side both times so to show me the majesty of its beauty and I'm not believing in what I'm seeing and not seeing, it was like slow motion, why did it not hit my windshield as it showed it beauty, another day on a fence post in a field that I normally did not look at, it glared at me with this penetrating stare, then one who I have seen numerous times before on my court on the same power line in the same spot as always, this time I drove very slow, we looked at each other intently until it had to turn away, again the same look, then I remembered the pictures I took one fall when ine was antagonizing three ravens, for quite a long time. I don't believe in coincidence, every thing happens for a reason. I told my daughter that I needed to find an Indian elder in town, but she searched the web and found out some, I still want to talk with an elder so I left my name at our local rancheria just today. I hope I get a call.

Red Tailed Hawk
I have been on an amazing path of self discovey and awakening over the past few years. It trully took "flight" for me when I started to notice the Red Tailed Hawk. My whole life I have always thought of them to be interesting but never put much thought into it. Then as if suddenly, as I was going through a trying period of change in my life there Red Tail was. Just the sight of the totem would instantly lift my spirits as if I knew my life were full of meaning, peace and I almost instantly new the next step to take . The more I observed and researched the more it showed itself to me. The Red Tail has given me strength, wisdom, excitement and a guide to walk down my path with. I have observed the Red Tail in every context possible and in many different quanities. My most recent was 8 in twenty minutes and 6 in three minutes. Truly amazing! I now know to look for answers from w/in and trust my own instincts and that is in great thanks to Red Tail.

Red Tailed Hawk
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

On my way to work this week, a Red Tail flew in front of my car on a dive for prey in the steep ravine to the right of the road. I did not see the meal, but I knew, the bird was successful.

I pondered over this as I do not see Red Tail frequently. Here is the story that integrates this into my life. Some parts I have withheld for reasons that I cannot speak of.

I work in a hospital as a secretary on afternoon turn and frequently "sit" for patients who are at risk for falling out of bed, combative, etc., on midnight turn. My patient for some weeks, was a man with partial native ancestry. There was an intuitive bond between us, a knowing that was deeper than our meeting in this life. After seeing Red Tail, tears would come to my eyes whenever someone would inquire of his health. It just so happened that this week, I was replaced by other co-workers, who also wanted to sit with him. Last week his temperature started rising and I became alarmed when I would find him flushed when it was my turn to sit. So this week, whenever I got the opportunity on my regular shift, I would stop in his room and check on him, bring him flowers. I knew he was not long for this life. Strange that nurses would not pick up on the fever. Yet, I know when an inevitable thing is to occur, a sort of blanket of amnesia happens in the psyche of doctors, nurses, caretakers and even family members. After all, the patient was beginning to plant his feet in another world so, like the "betwixt and between time" in the merging our days into nights, I knew my friend was in this time of wonder, but it was oblivious to most. Some would say, "It is your job to fix this man and save his life, but, we are not "God", we are human, and we all serve the spirit. Even though sometimes Doctors are filled with such remorse when they cannot save a patient's life, when all is said and done, we humans are powerless in the face of spirit....we may be able to juggle time with our physical medicines, but that only goes so far. His sister in another state sent flowers, cards, pictures and letters. Every day there would be something new to engage him in life. When he pointed to all the things that hung on his walls around his bed, and said that they have no meaning to him, I knew that he knew he was dying. Without being told his sister came from out of state, and it was only to be for a couple days. I was happy for him. Once she got here, she knew she should stay and hold his hand, as I had been doing, and the other sister was called. He passed within an hour of her arrival.

I should also say that when the tears started falling from my eyes, I remember thinking how salty they were. As time grew short, and all I could do was stop by, upon leaving, I would kiss my patient's forehead and asks got to bless him. The revelation was that when his body had a fever, (body on fire=red = Red Tail), his forehead was salty also. I am reminded of something I read years ago....something regarding relationships....two should be as one so that when one cries the other taste's the salt. But why does salt sting?

It was my day off when the call came that he had passed, the family wanted to speak with me. Strangely, I was dressed and ready to go out when it happened and was at the hospital before his body was cold. There was a storm front passing over with a brisk wind....I knew to be alert when flocks of birds took flight close to the road as my car passed. After the second happened, I slowed down, even though the wind told me to hurry. It was then I saw two horses by a barn. As I passed, the male took off in a full gallop up a rise and the female started after him, then turned and went down the rise, around a obstacle that was between them and sort of "headed him off at the pass". As he was galloping down hill with his mane flying in the wind, and they joined at full gallop, at the bottom of the rise, both running towards me, as happy and delighted as they could be. I knew that he passed quickly, had joined his deceased wife, and both were happy as could be at their reunion. Such joy filled my soul! Red Hawk appeared again floating above my car against the wind. When I got to the hospital, I related to his sister about the horses and she said that the two of them at one time had horses, and loved them.

And that is part of my story of Red Hawk. Thank you for reading.

Red-Tailed Hawk
I have always seen red-tailed hawks, even when I was a kid, because I usually spend a lot of time looking up, and checking the clouds. However, the past week, some strange things have happened. The first day, I had a juvenile red tail flight right over my head. He was so close, I ducked. He then landed in the road 20 feet from me. Then took off after 5 minutes. The second day, there was a red tail that presented it's self in the back yard. Just sat on the fence, and hung out. The third day, while at work, there was a red-tail who hopped out of the bushes and sat on the road about 3 feet from me. He just sat there. I walked towards him, and he maintained the 3 foot spaceing. He then, after about an hour, decided to take off. Was the weirdest thing ever. And the fourth day, yesterday, I went to walk out of my mother's house, and noticed that there was a juvenile red tail sitting on the step in front of the door. Was so odd to me, that they are so close. I don't know what it all means. I would like to say it's a good sign, but not too sure. If anyone knows, or has an offer of suggestion, I would gladly accept. This post was very helpful, and it allows me to get an idea where to look for translation ideas. Thank you.

Red Tailed Hawk
I was adopted when I was 5 and had not seen my sisters since then. I have been searching for over 30 years for them but I always hit a brick wall and got nothing. I started seeing "the Hawks" soon after and since 2000 I have found two of the four missing sisters. we are still looking for the other two but finding two of them has been a true joy to my life. I thought in 2000 when I got kidney cancer, that my life was over and at that time I had not found anyone. I kept noticing hawks during my drive home and even when i went on road trips. Seems the more i looked the more I saw and they gave me such a peaceful feeling when I would see them. It was like they were there to watch over me and my family. Well...then my son told me his heart warming thery. It is his belief that the hawk is the spirit of my birth father (who was 3/4 Cherokee) watching over us and he has led us to the two sisters that we have found and will aide in the location of the other two..No wonder the hawks give me such a feeling of peace. I even have my husband locate them when he has to travel on business. They too, calm him. They are truly amazing creatures.

Red Tailed Hawk as Spirit...
I recently went to a Shaman and after our journey he spoke of my power animal. His vision held numerous animals (bear, otter, fox, coyote quite a zoo!) with a Red Tailed Hawk flying above that then flew above his power animal. He said I had many spirit guides but the Hawk was dominant. I am trying to research and identify with this beautiful animal as a way of further self exploration. Please forward me any info you have. Thanks alot!

Red tailed hawk is what man kind is capable of becoming. The world is not for private goals because that goes against spirits plan. I had hawk visit me after I awakened my Kundalini energy on my own. There he sat in the tree across from my house waiting for me to come out. We both looked at each other in the eye and then he flew off. That was the most powerful moment in my life. My mother recently passed away and as she was dying hawk had come again to let me know of this situation. Hawk is with me everywhere I go. If you are open in your heart spirit will hear and give you what you need on this life path. You are not here on this planet by accident, there is a purpose to everything and this is the testing grounds to see if you are capable of becoming more than what you are. Most people do not gain this wisdom hawk gives you but with effort it is possible

I have always had a love of things in nature. My daughter tells me I have a certain connection with animals. They seem to sense my love for them. I have always admired the red-tailed hawk. There was a pair that spent their days near my house on a high hill. I could hear their babies calling them from their nest and later see them flying together. I recently moved to a different location in the middle of a pheasant farm and there are several hawks here. i love to watch for them. Today was a very special day. A hawk came and sat on my window sill and look in at me, not once but twice. I felt so honored but wonder what was the significance of this vist. My mother just past away in April. When she was alive she often remarked about how she never heard a BobWhite anymore. The day after she died a Bob White came to my house and sang and sang for a long time. I got curious and went outside to find it. It was on a pile of brush and I got to within a few feet of it. The next morning it sang again in the distance and was gone. I never heard it again. This visit from the hawh has me wondering. Does anyone have any words of wisdom about this.

I was working with a few horses from my herd I had asked the three to do a healing for a 3 yr. old boy with cancer they were standing with their eyes closed in deep meditation above them in the paddock there were 5 large red tailed hawks soaring in a pattern it was so cool. On my way home as I was driving I noticed ahead of me 5 hawks again flying in a pattern I stopped my car and watched I was totally mesmerized they then each went in different directions. Does anyone know what 5 means ? Are they my healing totems? Sherry

found a feather
Hi! I have an intersting story. My fiance and I picked up our wedding rings and decided to go out to the desert to enjoy the sunset and open our rings and try them on and talk about wedding plans. Well my fiance found a red-tailed hawk feather and brought it to me right before we open our rings. Such a good omen I think. Any comments?

Red Tail Hawk Totem
A very vocal Juvenile Red Tail Hawk is hanging around my house. Wakes me up every morning, he/she is beautiful. I am a paralegal, I realized after reading the totem information that I must speak my truth without fear and not be over powered by the one attorney that wishes to eliminate my presence because they have literally stolen from me and lied.

My best friend died just more then a month ago. Me and his son have been trying to handle his estate. Each time we are together at my friends house there has been a Red Tail Hawk there. He makes his presents known by his voice then we see him flying in circles. This goes on as long as we are there, sometimes all day. At first I only notice. Now his son does too. The other day when I left that property and went to where I'm living, as I turned onto my road, there in a tree right at the corner was a Red Tail setting on a branch not more then 100 feet away, staring at me. He then circled my house until I got up the drive. It has been going on now for about 4 week now and has to be a sign! The Crows are now doing the same type of things as they are truly messengers also. I have become more in tuned with Spirit Signs since my friends passing and it has amazed me. It also makes me wonder just how much I have missed in years past from lack of knowledge and understanding.

Hello, I was curious as to what the Red Tailed Hawk means to us. I am still learning about my culture. I have a beautiful mature Red Tail Hawk who stays in the field behind my house. I watch him every day and I always think of how beautiful and powerful he is. We tend to have a staring contest. This past April, the Creator told me to use the last name RedFeather.......This is what I use as my name when I am introduced at our dances. I want to thank you for all your information and I think you did a great job. I found all the information very helpful.

My Dad's spirit
My Dad died last Thursday, March 15, 2012. While driving back home alone after all the services on Tuesday afternoon I suddenly saw a hawk swoop down in front of my car. The majestic bird turned to allow me to see its red tail and I was quite excited. It flew ahead of my car briefly before it ascended and flew away. I felt it was my dad's spirit with me and it gave me a sense of peace and calm.

My path, too, has been crossed by the red-tailed hawk
For almost 6 years now, a red-tail I have named "Maury" has been a nearly daily visitor... I first encountered him as a fledgling calling for his mama in a nearby oak tree. His calls sounded so pitiful that I went out and stood beneath the tree for nearly an hour (taking photos and) reassuring him in a soothing voice that she would return soon. About 4 years ago, he acquired a mate ("Gladys"). They honored me by performing their aerial mating dance right in front of me! (More photos!) Most times, I can go outside, whistle a descending note which poorly imitates the red-tail's signature call and one or the other -- or both -- will soon show up overhead. (I have video posted online of them both answering me!) Last year, Maury even brought the still-twitching body of a decapitated western rattlesnake to the spar of a dead oak sapling right in front of me and held it up as if to show it off to me (fantastic photos!) before flying off with it to a huge valley oak across the field. I cannot even express in words what my relationship with the red-tails means to me... It is magic and comfort and excitement all mixed together within my heart...

Recently a red tailed hawk came injured to my home with a broken wing. I rescued him and am awaiting to here from the wildlife agency that has him as to when his wing will be healed and when he will be released. They say they will contact me as to when this is so I may be part of this. When he had been captured I talked to him and calmed him down. I was so in awe with his spirit.

My husband of 25 years passed away on July 17, 2012. We were riding our motorcycles in the heart of Cherokee indian country on the Cheraholla Skyway, when he had a heart attack and crashed. The next day as my sister drove me to the funeral home a Red Tailed Hawk flew in front of us with a serpent in his mouth. The hawk turned to make his red tail very obvious. I felt it was my great love telling me he was happy and riding the winding roads he loved.I don't think I've ever seen a Red Tailed Hawk before and had a profound feeling that it was him. In the week that followed, 4 other people in my family, all over the country, have had a Red Tailed Hawk swoop down in front of their cars, showing off its Red Tail. I have had a lot of problems since his death. Was he trying to tell me to use my wisdom and love to get me through this terrible part of my life

I've been searching for who I am & why I am who I am. Confused? In my searching, I wanted to know about "my" totem. Cats have always been special to me but somehow I didn't feel that cats were correct. Someone asked about animals in my dreams. Oddly enough, I couldn't remember dreaming of any animal other than a pink kangaroo when I was around 12. Well, the night after I was asked that question, I had a dream where a red tailed hawk was being attacked by an eagle. I protected the hawk & he was safe. That was the end of that dream. Later I remember that I had volunteered at a local zoo where I fed a red-tailed hawk, using a handlers glove, with meat in between fingers. This experience was quite wonderful. I was able to look deep withing the hawks eyes & saw such strength. So, now I'm thinking it's the red-tailed hawk as my totem. Any responses would be welcomed.

Red Tail Hawk
I was having a series of experiences with Red Tail Hawks. I saw a feather floating down in a beam of sunlight and it was a Red Tail Hawk feather. My friends with me helped me identify it as they are naturalists. I was the one who saw it, it was incredible. I was floating down a river on an inner tube when a Red Tailed Hawk circled above me and it looked right at me from the tree top. Than I heard one while I Was walking by the river and looked at the ground and found another feather. I have only been told that this is a messenger.

There was a young Red Tailed Hawk on a branch just outside my window when I came home today. I had seen them soaring in the sky casting an awesome , for some ominous shadow below. I had caught a few glimpses of them on them in trees before they quickly took to the air.. The one today was on a much closer branch. He stayed long enough for me to get my binoculars and get a good admiring look at him. As a result of seeing him I found your post. Thanks.
