ATS, American Tribal Style Bellydance
The Blue Stars of Tanit are an exclusively American Tribal Style Bellydance troupe based in the East San Gabriel Valley. They grew and took form out of Director Kristin Ohman"s student troupe The Roses of Shalimar in October 2005. Primarily a performance troupe, members of The Blue Stars of Tanit have also utilized the ATS medium in the spiritual context of bellydance as the honoring of women's rites of passage. The troupe name comes from an ancient North African Goddess, Tanit (Taw-neet), whose culture centered around Carthage, or modern Algeria. She was shown in sculpture to be a bluebird. Her priestesses were astronomers, and blue gemstones were sacred to her. The Ouled Nail tribe danced in her honor. The Homsa or Hand of Fatima, was once called the Hand of Tanit. The Blue Stars of Tanit are the 2006 Champions in the Tribal Group category for Belly Dancer of the Universe. They perform at festivals, parties, church/temple services, weddings, and at other rites of passage
