Niko, a man who helped my family bring me into the world. At 13 I was already subscribed to Adbusters and Utne reader (some of the best christmas gifts ever). He took me aside and ensured that I could change a tire, carry a load of shingles, and play street hockey with the rest of the boys in our town. We crossed the threshold of burningman together, in which all of lives were forever changed and our family grew exponentially. Most of his last years of his 20's have been spent in Gerlach work...

There is a way this place sits differently without the blinking lights and the music, without the poi spinners, stilt walkers, colored bodies, masks, elaborate clothes. Going north on 447 I still saw signs for "Indian Tacos", but this time with a home address spray painted on the ply-wood. Often people know me in one context or another and rarely the many chapters shall meet. I got that same feeling approaching, what I consider one of my major homes, Gerlach. I only know the Black Rock Desert...

I found two of my more memorable moments on my plane ride to the more southeastrn areas of the country.
A woman, 91 years old, red glittery nail polish and deep blue eyes. She spoke of her new boyfriend (the idea of dating at 91 makes me smile) her travels last year to Peru, the year before that to India, before that to Greece...mind you she didn't look like a woman who was a world traveller or had extravagant means...she was a good traveller, a small suitcase, comfortable red sweater with ...

So often I get strange looks around these parts, and wishing I had all my playmates to entertain me with a game of sorts. Needless to say my best frollicks now a days are out in nature. I went for a run through the reservation in the brisk morning and like most runs was led by intuition. Ohh I'll just scramble to those rocks. Only to find a coyote amongst the profile we both just looked at one another for a while. Then she sat down, so I did to. Then she put her head on her paws, I followed. ...

In that first
hardly noticed
moment
to which you wake,
coming back
to this life
from the other
more secret,
moveable
and frighteningly
honest
world
where everything
began,
there is a small
opening
into the new day
which closes
the moment
you begin
your plans.
What you can plan
is too small
for you to live.
What you can live
wholeheartedly
will make plans
enough
for the vitality
hidden in your sleep.
To be human
is to become visible
while carrying
what is...

"People say that what we are all seeking is a meaning for life. I don't think this is what we're really seeking. I think what we're seeking is an experience of being alive." Joseph Campbell.
"In art we create a utopia that promises us comfort that takes up the injuries inflicted by the world and turns them around. In art we have the possibility to depict all our dreams and utopias. For the dreams we encounter at night and sometimes by day tell us much about how to conduct ourselves. I don't mean that we should get lost in our fantasies like daydreamer or someone who suffers from a reality deficit (though who doesn't) I don't mean those fortunate lunatics who, because of their so-called "illness",can or must keep undercover. I am thinking of a consciously designed creative life that every single one of us should make as inventive as possible. I believe that an artistic person has the mission of getting to active grips with her dreams and making something of them, of being alert and observant and deploying his observations to re-evaluate and if needed in the most difficult and disagreeable cases, give a name to the 'woulds' we bear.
Even in an intolerable war or emergency situation, even where it's a question of naked survival, hope of a well-earned paradise lingers. For the human species has the god-given nature of being creative enough to produce at least a segment of paradise.
One thing seems certain: the pain caused by the loss of paradise is what first makes us notice paradise as a fact. Overtime, each of us has lost her own paradise, and personal loss goes along with the recognition of the vacuum it leaves behind. It is self-knowledge that drives us humans on. The possibility of seeing ourselves as creators has driven and still drives us.
Our religions and philosophies also promise us paradise. But as soon as relations and world views become ideologies and and stand for absolutes the presumed paradise is lost in burderous banality.
YOu gaze into the mirror and discover yourself." a fellow artist.
to live this life you were meant to live
about me
As a myth, each of us has a direction that we come from and head towards...my direction is my source,
...and my destination
In my earliest years, I was informed the world, that I was about to grow up in, and it’s problems, that I was required to confront, were a source of natural cause sometimes explained as, “that’s just the way it is”. Under this belief, I should be a nurse and married to a farmer at the end of the dirt road in the corner of Minnesota right now. Fortunately philosophizing and the authority of my experience have never been beyond my rational. I looked for a better way.
Since those first several years the following twenty has been committed to regeneration of community, personal exploration, environmental connectivity, and actualizing my potential to encourage the possible. All things that I felt were solutions to the problems of this world. Looking into structured programs of immersion and service I came to such experiences as being an exchange student in Germany, working throughout the U.S as an AmeriCorps member, being a case worker of 9/11 victims for the Red Cross, and furthering my environmental education with Audubon Expedition Institute. Under the principle of my own self-direction and initiative, I’ve taken on various roles to polish my educational, personal, and professional goals: Living on an intentional community and growing 80% of the food consumed, becoming a wilderness counselor for at-risk youth, becoming Wilderness First Responder certified, and most recently managing a Permaculture farm in the tropics of Costa Rica.
These experiences have been my “initiation” into adulthood. My teachers have been abundant along a continuum of people, places, and overcome challenges. I have learned about the power of one in the context of a supportive community. I have learned that it is about what we can give not what we’ll receive. I have learned that sustainability is not enough we need regeneration, I have learned that a better life is not at the expense of exploiting millions of others lives. I have gone through many transitions and deep transformations that have provided me to perceive and be in the world deeply and consciously. Undoubtedly, the greatest lesson has been the journey.
Now I am left with the question of what to take from my past to help create the future.
If the teachers that I’ve encountered, the lessons that make up my life, and the story that I live by are going to mean anything, they have to be grounded. I’ve come to a point where I need to be more anchored with a larger reference point. With a culture which drives us out of our bodies, out of our minds, and out of our natural environments, there is a richer level of experience and existence that’s worth working for. This is what brings me to the Present.
In the last few years I have fantasized about working in a cross disciplinary method of therapy by empowering others through wilderness, movement, and art. To teach in the way I learned. My aspiration is to help provide youth with a framework to work through the turmoils and difficulties of moving into adulthood and realize some approach to be integrated and well-adjusted emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. While simultaneously co-creating the reintegration of a healthy society, a community (human and non-human) in which I am a part of, and a solution I believe in.
Often I find those that encapsulate my own desires and goals. Similar motivations run through our veins. We all have the same chambers of love and fear. My goal currently is to use my experiences as a point of departure as a contributing member of a scholastic community, to mature my own learnings into a translatable philosophy and transferable lifestyle that I agree with, and to get to grips with what my dreams are and make something of them.

for many evers she has been with me this one
before we knew eachother we were in
eachother
and we travel still together
I come to her in the storm, part of the sky, the ocean
she comes to me on the wind, part of the laughter
of the earth
gaia incarnate
love eternal
you bliss me
and I bask in the reflections you manifest
I so much more than love you
for no reason and every reason
with me you shall remain blessed creature
I give thanks for your existence- period

There's just something about a woman who's dustier than you that's a turn-on. Maybe it's the smile, or the laugh which every ONCE in a while is under control. Maybe its the ability to pole-vault way over the small talk and get right down to the GRIT, and i mean right down to it. She talks magic and she also talks trash.
And besides, her truck was named after me! dont let her tell you otherwise...the proof is in the door!
Wherever we are, just being near this creature makes me feel at home.
I can't wait to bathe in her light once more.

This magical being o light has helped me to see in the darkness. Our brief but insightful interactions have been some of my most cherished moments on the playa. She always leaves me wanting more, which is quite enchanting and the sign of a radiant goddess.

On the day I met you, you woke me with your beautiful voice singing outside of my desert abode. When I emerged, I saw you there, spinning an unlit fire-staff... covered in gold body paint and glitter. When your brother introduced us, we hugged and some of your glow and glitter rubbed off onto me. Looking back on it, I think this was very fitting, this physical allusion to the spiritual effect you have on those you meet. Don’t ever loose that sparkle, Aurora... and don’t ever quit spreading it around.

My sweet soul sister
Your grace is a light
for which the earth radiates upon
Your strength is that
of a thousand men
Your love is like the ocean
faithful and strong
Thank you for your presence
in this sweet world
and for finding the courage
to continue to love

Wow what a heart.
Aurora has inspired me since I was 4, though I didnt realize it at the time. She is fearless of convention or naysayers, and follows her heartpath true. It was a grand day when I woke up to her brilliance.
What a blessing to have her be a part of my life.
Thanks for being Sister.
