Doggie first aid?

How can I help?

We picked up a dog that had been hit by a car. She spent the day at the vet. X-rays show no broken bones and no apparent internal bleeding. Lots of cuts to her head and face and her nose is swollen. Shes very lethargic, still in shock. She possibly has a concussion, most of the injury seems to be to her head, chest and front legs. The vet wrapped one of her front legs, prescribed prednizone and an antibiotic for her brain. She doesn't complain when you move her and she lifts her head and looks around a bit. She sniffed my dog, but she wont get up, thats the extent of her movement right now.

She hasn't gone to the bathroom all day. She drank water from a dish a bit ago, but that was the first time she would drink all day, all fluids have been iv all day. Shes sleeping now, what can I do for her? I'm looking for natural suggestions that I can use to help heal her wounds and help her feel better. I know a bit about herbs, but I dont know whats dog safe. Im going to pick up some soft dog food for her cause crunching sounds like it would suck for her. :(

Shes a 3 year old jack russell terrier for size reference.

sit with her.. pet her.. love her.. speak softly to her...
take some of the water.. with your finger.. and touch her nose so she licks it. Do the same with the soft food.
Nurse her gently back to health. Love does wonders.

I wish you lots of luck darlin.

You are a great doggie mom!
You could try Rescue Remedy, to calm fher nerves. (I had a "weiner" dog who had seizures, and would give her a full dropper.) I wouldn't do too much by way of herbs, for fear that they would interfere with meds. Keep her wounds clean with hydrogen peroxide. Maybe a lil' tea tree salve. Acidoplilus would be great to help with friendly intestinal bacteria. They also help with the body's natural resistance. (Antibiotics tend to kill them off.) Don't give them to her at the same time as her meds, atleast a couple hours apart. The best way for a pootch is to splurge and let 'em eat yogurt. Especially if she's not wanting to eat much right now. My dog had Parvo. After 10 days of starving and being sicky-poo, she started by eating yogurt. I'd lace it with an extra dose of like three strong acidophilus capsules, broken into it. I'd also slip liquid minerals into her water. Good luck! Hopefully, she'll get well soon. I'm sending smootches for the pootches! XOXOXO!!

Aw, she's not even yours? Have you tried calling the UCD Vet/Med school for advice? They might have good info on herbs and contraindicated meds...

Give her a quiet space and give her a day or so to recoup. You can apply triple antibiotic ointment to the wounds to help them heal and really the rest is up to them. I had a cat who got ran over and for a few days she was very topsy turvey and disoriented. She righted in a a few days. Really too much treatment isn't necessary. A quiet and safe place with food water and care. Make sure the vet checks for a microchip and report a found dog at county and city animal control.

Natascha is right, T, don't give her any herbs or anything- just a safe quiet place to recover. She probably just feels like shit and needs to rest. That's the best thing you can do for her right now. If she doesn't come out of it in a few days take her back to the vet and have them check her out! Good luck!

Heck the fact that she was drinking on the first day is amazing! That's recovery. If she is really thirsty this morning don't let her gulp, she'll just vomit it. Ice chips are good to control water intake. Appetite and thirst good, normal poo and pee good. Good in, good out. :) I'm betting she'll be better by this morning. :)

Shes peed twice now. Really strong smelling, but no blood in it. Im going to pick up some rescue remedy for her today. This morning she wouldnt drink out her bowl again, but she would lick water off my fingers. She drank a tiny bit of chicken broth the same way, but wont even think about food yet. I didnt really expect her too yet. She didnt want too much though. She won't use her back legs still and is mostly sleeping, but when shes awake she is alert. Her swollen eye is SLIGHTLY less swollen, but at least she can see out of it now. Shes sneezing a bit too. Poor tny dog gets COLD! I bought her a sweater this morning, she seems to like it. She also has a warm blanket that she seems to like being covered with.

The vet says no microchip found, Im going to post found ads with the animal shelter and im watching craigslist.

Thanks! Ive placed ads in the pennysaver and CL, i didnt think about the Bee. I'll do that. I called animal control and they said that you can't leave a message like that which i think is kinda lame. So I just hope whoever is looking for her looks further than the animal shelter.

Shes doing MUCH better and is recuperating very quickly! Shes eating and drinking and walking around some. Still not using her back legs well and has balance issues but shes recovering very nicely. Im not worried about her anymore, I know she'll be ok, its just a matter of time now. Im glad htat Im out of school so that i can be home every day with her. The extra love is def helping! (But shes getting spoiled already lol)
