11 March: A walk in the woods

Good times. Portage is thawing out earlier than I expected. Turns out cigars from Nicaragua compliment sunny, chilly hikes through Appalachia quite well.

Looking forward to a weekend road trip, Philly and Arlington, I celebrated last St. Patty's day in a green costume, but sober. This year, let's turn those tables with a little sisterly-help, shall we?

Spending a lot of time thinking about the hostel and what is lost when a literary work is revised beyond cleaning up actual mistakes. Its kind of like the difference between dressing comfortably, and by chance wearing a popular outfit, and dressing to impress... which has its own sense of validation when you in fact wow the target crowd.

Travels, Trips, & Trash

About an hour ago, I stood in front of my Guard company and told them I won't be around anymore. Running up from the rear, I'd worried that I wouldn't keep my composure in this, my words of farewell. But that was easy. The hard part came next, with the soldiers- some of whom I have known for over 4 years- trickling up to my office with final salutes and well-wishes. 11 days shy of the 11th anniversary of my enlistment, there's a very good chance I am wearing this uniform for the last time.

Kosovo and Castro, both resolved in a 3-day span!

I spent most of the Fall writing and rewriting a novel about modern-day Cuba... had intended to do 1 more thorough revision before submitting it to the masses around April. Now I'll have to really consider the value of the commentary. The embargo will likely last the Bush presidency, but it won't make it through Obama's first 100 days.

Fidel did EXACTLY what I thought he would do (I just thought he would hold out longer... I didn't thin... read more

I have not posted anything to this site in 5 months.

Today, Kosovo declared itself an independent republic. It is the happiest day in the lives of my great friends in Kamenica since the Marines arrived in 1999, and it is a day they will proudly tell their grandchildren about. They might leave out the details of how drunk they were, but the essence will be clearly communicated.

Since I last wrote, I have appreciated the priceless experience of publishing my thoughts on the biker culture,... read more

1. ESPN Gamecast: The boys at the station have always had a hunch the internet could do for sports fans what television can never quite provide... now they are much closer to exactly what that is. Any kind of stat you want, real-time updates on every other game, in every other sport, going on at the same time as you participate in a chat with a lot of other people, a lot of other places, who are also trying to stay up on their team while catching up on a million other things. Its a big improv... read more

1. How about Miller Chill? You don't know how many times I rode past billboards of this stuff, shaking my head in disgust, thinking how DARE they create a concoction and expect us to think it will capture the taste of a cold Corona plugged with a slice of lime? Guess what: THEY DID IT... and its better than the original. I have a lot of Hispanic friends who drink Miller brews, instead of the Mexican versions, because, let's face it, domestic is cheaper, and we're all just trying to get drunk ... read more
