...seen really, really HORRID children's theatre? Do you wanna know what's worse? Running lighs for really, really HORRID children's theatre. Nothing whatsoever against the children. This rant is *so not about the kids.
For the last 2 days I've been in...well...hell I suppose is the best way to describe it. See, I'm an easygoing kinda girl. Not much phases me or gets under my skin. But this...um..."director" (and I use that term vehhhry loosely) really must be arrested for SUI.
What is SUI, you ask? Sheer Unadulterated Incompetence.
Seriously. I've never been *this close to being as unprofessional as to walk off a job. But these are kids we're talking about. So I won't. And for the next three loooooooooooong days, I will go back and try, as gracefully as humanly possible, to not go quietly insane as I endure this....this....thing they're calling a show.
What's so very sad is that this place bills themselves as "professional children's theatre". Um, yeah. Anyone who thinks what is going on in there is "professional" is utterly delusional. I just hope I maintain the presence of mind not to tell this "director" just that should she dare get in *my face again and ask me "have you ever *worked with children?"...to which I responded "The *children are not the problem". These poor kids open tomorrow morning and they have *yet to do a full run-through without stopping and starting in EVERY SINGLE SCENE. Theses are like 7-14year olds and they have this thing as a three hour show. All this extraneous crap added into the script - stuff that completely interrupts the flow of the show and not a *single scene even close to being polished. And this "director" is blaming everyone but the person in the mirror. It's really the sickest, most self-indulgent crap I have ever had the displeasure to work with. And I know what I'm talking about - I've done it all, directed, stage managed, lights, sound, stage crew and tons of performing. A high school sophomore Director I worked with earlier this year is a far more competent than this delusional person who's been doing this theatre camp for like ten years.
The turnover at this place is huge, and I'm hearing from anyone who's worked for them that this is just typical. Ugh. Wish I had known that. Guess my first clue should have been that none of the scores of people I've worked with have ever heard of this outfit. It's not professional children's theatre...it's glorified, substandard daycare with a horrid three hour unprepared piece of crap show at the end. And of course, being inexperienced children, they think this is professional because that's what the brochure says. @@ Good lord, I feel sorry for those kids when they get to their first real audition/show in a real theatre and realize they haven't been taught squat about professionalism in theatre.
This gig just isn't worth the pay. I will never, *ever work for these people again.
