Is anyone on my f-list also a friend of Amar's? I'm concerned about her post in the Rachel Brice tribe. I'd appreciate someone telling me if it's something I should know, or if I can stop worrying....

Re: Learn the music! That means know the names of the songs! (in Too Much Drama to Dance) I should add that some friends and I joke about how Turkish 9/8s "separate the girls from the women"... watching the floor clear as soon as the band switches to Rompi Rompi and only a few remain :) I am not usually one of them, but that's because ... read more

Re: Learn the music! That means know the names of the songs! (in Too Much Drama to Dance) Cheers to you, Phoenix! Once you get to a certain level, ballet and modern dancers are required to learn basics of music and how to listen to it. I'll always think like a musician, and though I am not a teacher of dance and never have claimed to b... read more

Re: Learn the music! That means know the names of the songs! (in Too Much Drama to Dance) These dancers weren't even moving to the stressed beats in a traditional Western 9/8. I don't have a clue WHAT they were doing, but they clearly thought it was wonderful. I know tribal can work to a triple meter, this performance didn't. The way t... read more

Re: Learn the music! That means know the names of the songs! (in Too Much Drama to Dance) This is my BIGGEST pet peeve. I'm a musician by trade and was a musician LONG before I started bellydance. I have NEVER seen a community of performers that is collectively so willfully blind to the meaning of the music and the hard work of the mus... read more
