Discrimination is occurring, and people are being denied Internet access based on the exercise of their free speech rights. Free speech is important and this is not up for debate. What is up for debate, is if the principle of free speech applies on the Internet.
Net neutrality demands free and non-discriminatory access to all people, whether their message is political, commercial, organizational or social.
Canadians have from time to time had limits to free speech imposed upon them. However, where that speech is restricted through law, the government is held responsible for this restriction. Bill C-250 demonstrates the government's limiting of free speech for the public good. It is, however, unfathomable to delegate this power to the telecommunications companies, to exempt them from public responsibility and give them control over what is transmitted over the Internet.
