Responding to Elfquestions

Meanwhile, elsewhere on the internet...

Vadriel came across a journal entry asking readers what it meant to be elfin. The writer claimed to have used the adjective to describe a tall, svelte female friend with long, dark hair and pale skin. Though meant as a compliment, the young lady was supposedly confused and possibly a bit offended as HER notion of what an elf is was a bit different. This lead the young man to look up a definition of "elfin" to make his point and he was surprised to find that the OFFICIAL definition of elfin includes words like "small," "sprightly," "mischievous," "diminutive," etc.

He then asked his readers what they thought of the matter, essentially boiling it down to "Which one is right? Modern Fantasy like LoTR and its copycats, or the dictionary whose definition is more in-line with old fairytales and the whole Santa thing." He was particularly interested to know how, if elves were tiny little sprites, they could supposedly be so good with the longbow...

Yeah, I just HAD to put in my two ducats.

--------------------------------------------------------
You definitely are not alone (in your thinking).

The fact that the official definitions of elfin, elven and elfish are, shall we say, less than accurate, is a curious anomaly to be certain and one that has been causal of no small amount of ill will towards humankind. (This, of course, being in reference to usage within the common tongue.)

The general ignorance of the round-eared ones has been a dual-edged blade since your people first attempted to elevate themselves above all other life on this world. On the offhand, the humans' misconception of elvenkind has been beneficial in ages now passed and continues to be today. Avoiding involvement in men's petty wars and hiding from the likes of your "inquisitions" and "witch hunts" is made simpler when the majority of your race has little conception of what an elf even is, enough so that we have become the stuff of legends and stories and most of THESE are woefully, even insultingly, inaccurate.

In the guidehand of course, it remains that the mortals' concept of "elfin" IS unapologetically insulting. It has only been in the most recent of your brief generations that any reflection of the elvish nature and ideal has come to be reflected in the stories and artwork of men. The works of Master Tolkien (and it is beyond protest and debate that a master he was, despite his youth and mortal being) continue to be fiercely debated among the elves of the world for never before had one of the line of men come so close to revealing elves as they truly are. Tolkien, as his kind calls him -as too must I, for his name among elves is known only to himself and my people, who named him elf-friend- and his surprisingly INhuman writings shined a light on all of elvenkind- a light that has been reflected in the hearts and works of many who came after him. Only one brief human lifetime ago, nearly all humans represented our race (and thought of them, too) in manner and appearance more akin to brownies or kobolds. (Or "gnomes," one might add although the comparison is moot, as gnomes do not actually exist.)

Though mankind's misconceptions have kept us safe from human affairs, surely it must be impossible not to recognize the slight to elfdom caused by such ignorance. Allow me to assure you that elves are neither diminutive sprites nor mischievous goblin cobblers. And not a single elf in all of history has EVER worked in a toyshop for the sole benefit of human children. An elf's stature and seeming is like enough to your own that we have walked peacefully and unhindered among your kind since man first began creating something akin to culture. If you will forgive me for stating this truth, humans, being less evolved and refined, actually run a far wider gamut in differing heights than elves. There are those among you with the stature of ogres and so too could a decent number of adult humans see eye-to-eye with a dwarf. The elder races of the world are every bit as consistent in their statures as they are in their natures.

As for the use of the longbow, I am forbidden to reveal what you humans refer to as "military secrets" so weapon preferences and martial techniques are most certainly unbroachable subjects to discuss with a mortal. However since your opinion of us is far more positive than most of your fellow round-ears, I will go out on a limb somewhat for the benefit of your curiosity. Bearing in mind that all elves and MOST humans are of a similar height and form, thereby allowing the use of similar if not identical tools, including weaponry, I will say this:

We are Elves. Anything you can do, we can do better.

Reguards,

The Next President of the United States of America

"...Before a crowd of cheering thousands, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois laid claim to the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday night, taking a historic step toward his once-improbable goal of becoming the nation's first black president. Hillary Rodham Clinton maneuvered for the vice presidential spot on his fall ticket without conceding her own defeat..."

Why am I not surprised that Hillary is trying to have her cake and eat it too? After being beaten by her opponent she won't congratulate the winner or even admit that she lost, but she will start seeding the airwaves with her "willingness to consider" a Vice Presidential nomination UNDER him.

When this whole thing started, I was SO excited. No matter WHO won the Democratic presidential nom, I was going to be ECSTATIC- I liked Hillary AND Obama. I didn't even have a preference. On the one hand, we get a non-male. On the other, we get a non-white. Either way, it was going to be an historical process and outcome and knock on wood if you must, but now, as then, I simply find myself with far too much faith in the American population (a rare thing, I know) to fathom that a Republican could possibly win a presidential campaign after the last 8 years- especially one fronted by such a staunch supporter of one of the worst and most despised presidents in our country's history. And as much as WE hate our president, the rest of the world hates him even more and thanks to the internet and almost instant news, we no longer live in as restrictive of a bubble culturally speaking. Even the densest of us have at least some inkling of what the world thinks of us and our government these days and that will have bearing.

But I'm getting off topic a bit.
As I said, I started this without preference. I withheld support for any particular candidate until i heard what they had to say and followed their actions over the months. There was also a time when I agreed with my father who was of the opinion that the best choice the Dems could make would be to put Hil and Barack together as a kind of dreamteam to crush the opposition... and now, because I HAVE been watching the debates and the speeches and the photo ops and the interviews, the only thing I fear (now that Barack Obama has clinched the Presidential nomination) is the possibility of having Clinton on the same ticket.

"Hillary is, and has been from the beginning, the candidate of the angry in America;
Barack is the candidate of the hopeful. Indeed, part of the change he wants in
America is not only from the Bush presidency but from what was well under way
under the Clintons.

The kind of people he has wanted in his campaign and in a potential administration
surely preclude both Clintons. Obama wants team players -- has anyone, anywhere,
anytime, ever described either Clinton as such? Obama has also said he does not
want drama queens or kings -- case closed."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Georgie Anne Geyer
I withdrew my once support for Bill's wife as a result of watching Hillary herself. I thought I wanted her for president but now I wouldn't hire her as a housesitter. The distinguished Senator from New York has, I feel, shown her true colors repeatedly during this protracted process. She has proven to me to be the kind of person that I would be loathe to vote for under even in the face of the darkest alternative (though not even my personal dislike and distrust of her would cloud my judgment enough to vote for 4 more years of business as usual with McCain.) I can totally understand why she would "consider an offer for the vice presidency" - I'm sure she's seen as we all have with this last sham of an administration that you can easily run the country from the VP's desk if you are ambitious and intrusive enough. I for one have my fingers crossed that Obama names a Veep soon and that it is practically ANYONE but his aforementioned challenger. Sorry Hil, but ya blew it.
Just my opinion, of course. ; )
CONGRATULATIONS BARACK!
(understand that if you don't stay the course, though, I'll say mean things about YOU in my blog too)
There, that should scare him to keep to the straight and narrow. *koff *koff... "tiger"
...damn.
How's everyone been? A number of us got to see each other over the past two weekends, but this message is for the rest, mostly, as well as those whom I typically see regularly who have noticed recently that "Vade isn't around anymore."
Sorry that I've been hard to get a hold of and even harder to actually see - I've been busting my ass sideways on that house pictured above. There's a gigantic dumpster sitting beside it now that is getting progressively fuller every day as I haul old, unsalvageable crap out of the house and give it a good ol' fashioned dumpster toss. The weather is getting really hot, really fast and I only have the bin for another week and a bit, so it all has to be cleared out by then. After THAT is done, I'm getting in reps from three different estate agencies to get estimates and recommendations and then, most likely, will be patching holes, knocking out plaster, putting up drywall, painting, fixing a few ceilings and refinishing all the wood floors.
Yes, I am doing all this by myself. I can handle it (at least, I'm fairly certain of that.) In case anyone out there is questioning my abilities (which I've heard has been happening now and again... but people talk about other people all the time; I shouldn't be immune either so no hard feelings if you're "guilty." Frankly I don't give a crap. ;P ) don't forget that I'm one of the people who gets the call when OTHER people need help with this kind of thing. Sure, I've never done it professionally, but I've done enough of it as pro-bono work my whole life to know what I'm doing and know what I'm capable of. Sadly for all the rest of you, this means that I've had to shut off my usual "help anyone, anytime with anything" mentality so that I can help myself for a change so apologies to anyone that could really use a hand between now and completion of this project. I'm just not available currently and don't expect to be anytime soon.
Hmmm... of course, I guess technically I'm still not helping myself. I'm helping my father. Eh. Oh well. Close enough.
So anyone who's been wondering what the hell Vade's been doing about a job - you're looking at it. Someone has to do it and my dad certainly can't afford to hire anyone so it's a full time gig for the next few weeks. As such, if you haven't seen me for awhile and you continue to not see me for awhile, at least this way maybe you'll actually "get the memo" and I can stop fielding the same questions over and over again when I do have time to show up to something. <g>
Anyone who wants me done sooner is more than welcome to come out and get dirty. And I do mean dirty. And probably sick. Possibly dead. This place is gross. Especially the basement. <lol>
Not one but THREE days!
Come hear us play...
((see, that all rhymed. This is why we make the big bucks))
Though there's a lot of info to share, I'm keeping this short and sweet as I can.
Saint Patrick's Weekend
3 days, 3 shows:
Friday 14th------------9:00 - 12:00
Saturday 15th--------4:00 - 6:00
Monday 17th----------9:00 - 12:00
All at LANIGAN'S IRISH PUB in New Castle!
There's been a LOT of questions about which day most people are going. No one knows. No one has made up their minds on which day TO go yet cause WE gave you guys too many options! <lol> But after a handful of brief discussions, Your favourite friendly neighborhood isish trio would like to suggest SATURDAY as the likely best day for the wearin' O' the green in lovely New Castle. There will be several bands plus Irish Step Dancers! Here's the day's rundown besides us:
March 15
- Open 7am-10am for KEGS & EGGS Irish Breakfast!
- County Mayo, 12pm-4pm
- Burke School Of Irish Dance performance at 5pm (website)
- Mixed Greens, 7pm-10pm
- Back Lash (rock), 10pm-1am
We're bookending the Burke dancers on Saturday. The night is not about US at all... it's almost our day off where we'll just be keepoing the energy and music flowing between the band that ends at 4 and the one that starts at 7. We're planning on hanging out there all night and seeing just how "into the holiday" we can really get!
Barring that, if you're main goal is to see Colin's Way own the night, then Friday would be your day. Be there by 9pm in that case and BRING ID just in case! They reserve the right to kick out anyone underage after 10pm.
Finally... if you miss the first two shows and you're not worried about turning into a pumpkin, you'll have a last shot on the REAL St. Pat's day and you can stay up late with us on Monday. We'll keep you up, promise!
So we know where WE'LL be... what about YOU?
...and so am I.
People seem to have a tendency to write off celebs as just a bunch of stupid, self-absorbed narcissists who would all be flipping burgers if it wasn't for acting/music/porn/sports/etc (jury's still out on the sports guys but Bo knew math, history, science...) They don't see these people as REAL people with the same kind of thoughts, life experiences, interests and intellects as the rest of us. Just like the people at your local Wal-Mart, celebs run the gamut from "super genius" to "sharp as a sack of wet mice."
For those of you who don't recognize the Porn Star pictured, (firstly, consider hiring a contractor to move that rock you've been living under and secondly...) it's Asia Carrera who's been in the biz for a long time. If you've never seen her before then you most likely don't watch much porn, haven't seen many "adult magazines" and either have never been in an adult toy store or, if you have been, you must have had your hands over your eyes cause this girl's face (and other parts) have been everywhere for almost as long as I can remember.
Now, I can guess what a lot of you are thinking. "How smart can she be really? I mean, granted she's obviously asian so she automatically has that genetic coding that makes her better at math and science than the average person but she can't be THAT smart otherwise she wouldn't be a porn star!"
Anyone who DID have thoughts along those lines, get your heads out of your collective asses and read this:
---------------------------------------------
Retired porn star Asia Carrera, real name Jessica Steinhauser, is a bit of a legend in the porn industry. With 36-26-36 measurements, she performed in a jaw-dropping 400 hundred films in her career and exchanged an unthinkable amount of bodily fluids. She's also mother of two.
She calls herself "the nerd of porn," and we assumed it was some kind of in-joke, until we saw her credentials. Here is somebody who studied piano as a child and by the age of 14 WAS PLAYING IN CARNEGIE HALL.
AT 16, she went to Japan and TAUGHT English classes. She was a state spelling champ, in the National Mathematics League, a Spanish National Honor Society member, placing in National Geography, Language and Math Olympiads, and is a member of Mensa.
MENSA.
She's in fucking MENSA.
end of argument right there, but let's continue...
That got her a free ride to Rutgers, where she double-majored in business and Japanese. This naturally inspired her to change her first name to Asia and become an entrepreneur in America's fastest growing business. Either that, or her self-professed hatred of her parents' pressure on her to succeed academically made her lash out by riding random guys reverse cowgirl on camera.
Whatever works!
When she and her brother get in the room together, she admits a tendency to "geek out," and would rather volley IMs back and forth than hold an actual conversation... Her geek hallmark, however, is her love of LAN parties and Unreal Tournament (handle: megabitchgoddess).
Now that she's no longer taking shots to the face while sprawled out on pool tables, you can expect her to dish it just as hard and fast online. Keep an eye out for her self-made skins, or download them yourself!
---------------------------
(the above was blatantly stolen from the website listed below and pointlessly altered by yours truly)
So not only is she a genious, she's creative as all hell being not only a musical prodigy but also a skilled enough artist to make her OWN SKINS for online gaming. Add to all that the fact that she's decades ahead of the social maturity curve by having the strength and bravery to choose a career that the majority of our society on some level considers basal, disgusting, demeaning and immoral.
Stick that up your ass and sit on it for a bit, why dontcha?
And if you found THAT interesting, check out the list it came from:
"8 celebrities you didn't know were geeks"
http://www.cracked.com/article_15753_8-celebrities-you-didnt-know-were-geeks.html
which includes others such as Natalie Portman, Vin Diesel and Dolf Lundgren. ((I'd be shocked if anyone that any ONE of us knows is as smart as Dolf Lundgren.)) If you give it a look, don't miss the bit after KATE BECKINSALE (yes, the skinny vampire chick from Underworld) that tells you to go to page 2 or you'll miss half the list.
Just doing my little part to open everyone's minds a bit.
For those of you who are big fans of the Late Robert Jordan's awesome (albeit excessively long and plodding) series I have good news (if you haven't already heard.) Jordan's successor has been chosen to write the final book. It's a done deal and supposedly already under the pen.
here's more info for the jordanianly minded:
Let's not kid ourselves. Like not a single person actually "gets" me. I sometimes wonder how i tend to lose people when I go off on one of my tangents. I just figure that everyone thinks like me and will be able to follow along with the disastrous train wreck that will doubtless result from my SEEMINGLY random strings of topics.
It's really only been in recent years that I realized just how much I DON'T think like other people. And the worse thing is, since no one thinks like me it's damn near impossible to explain myself to others or "what it's like to be me." Well, for those of you who have wondered (often aloud) "what would it be like to be in Vade's head just for a minute?"
Here ya go... this is the best way I can think to illustrate. This is my mind when relatively relaxed...
If YOU don't know either, I'm about to enlighten you. And if you're anything like ME, you'd better be sitting down for this.
So about 30 minutes ago I got word from the organizer of this Saturday's concert that SPHINX CAFE in Pittsburgh charges people who choose to BRING their own Beverages an additional TWO DOLLARS for the "okay" to guzzle suds in their establishment. Maybe you "city folk" know of this and are thinking "yeah... okay, that's pretty standard" I don't know. But to MY mentality this is a little messed up. Okay, sure I know it's just another 2 bucks bringing the total for the evening to a mere 4 dollars for those who choose to libate and that you're still saving a whopping great deal o' green over buying drinks if they actually SERVED them (at 2.50 - 5.00 a pop) but still it's the premise of the thing that rubs my sensibilities the wrong way.
I'm in the process of changing all the "Internet Mini Posters" to include a note about this "cork charge" thing so that hopefully no-one is surprised when they arrive, beers in hand, and are told they have to pay double. Hopefully everyone will see the updated versions and/or my follow-up blog and be square on the info.
Sorry about that... its the Cafe's policy, definitely not ours!
That's right folks. You've begged, you've cried, you've nagged us for years. And now the time has finally arrived.
Yes, you heard it here first ((or second... POSSIBLY third or fourth depending on what tribes you're a member of and whether or not you have one of us as a friend)) BUT EITHER WAY Colin's Way has finally heard your pleas. And together they have decided to flatly ignore them. No more will the mournful laments of "guys... it's 3 in the morning, can't you call it a night?" stop us.
"You played that like a dozen times already!" will not prevent us from another rousing rendition of Whiskey in the Jar.
Blood-curdling screams of "SHUT THOSE BLOODY BAGPIPES UP!!!" Will, at best, result in laughter and thrown objects.
And of course the oft-heard "Don't you think you guys have had enough to drink?" will get you a swift punch in the gob. (( that means "the mouth" to all you ignorant COLONISTS ))
You got it, we've heard you loud and clear and WE'RE GOING TO PLAY EVEN MORE NOW because YOU gobshites wouldn't shut the hell up! Remember you brought this on yourselves.
Tonight I caught up on the internet radio show "Something Vaguely Reasonable" which Circle and Springwood's own OWEN features on as "Sanguinist." For those of you that haven't yet taken the time to give it a listen, I highly recommend that you do! It's a lot of fun, informative and always funny. The next time you're going to be on the internet for an hour or so, open up the show in a new internet window or tab and click the link under whichever episode you want to listen to that says "DIRECT DOWNLOAD." At least, that's how it works on my computer. I like sitting down and doing nothing but absorbing the show but, If nothing else, it could be a good thing to listen to in the background while cruising around the 'net.
So this is my official support of the show. Go check it out!
For the one or two of you who don't know, Back in... um. January? February? One of those two. ((I think it was January.))
I flew all the way to that state on the other side of the country. The big, long one that hogs up most of the coastline. I forget it's name but it doesn't really matter seeing as how most of it will be underwater by this time next decade. My condolences to any of you who live out there. I suggest you move soon. GET OUT WHILST THOU CANST and buy yourself some nice beach-front property in Nevada.
I won't bore you with the details, but I had a great time seeing Los Angeles shortly before its destruction. Not because LA is great, but because I got to see my best friend in the whole world again: NABEEL! We hung about in "The Land that Ozone Forgot" for a few days and then packed up a Uhaul trailer. Four or Five days later we rolled into Pittsburgh and I'm thrilled to have my Cinnamon Bear back.
On the way there was much talk of a new musical project... not just a band, but an experience of light and sound the likes of which the world has never known before... and all that dramatic stuff.
While driving across this great nation ((ignoring said nation's shitty-ass government)) I casually snapped a few pics and this little gem came out. A dash of digital tweaking and we've got a relatively nifty and engaging image if I do say so myself, and I do! Hope you all like it.
Stumbled across this a few minutes ago... "The most dangerous roads in the world."
And number one? It's in Bolivia where our own Ross Thompson used to live! Pretty views though.
The fucked up thing is, I look at this stuff (particularly the "world's most dangerous hiking trail" in China) and think "I would LOVE to go check that out!"
The SIN of homosexuality: An open letter to Dr. Laura Schlessinger
I've come across this several times on the net.
Each time I read it again, I still laugh just as hard.
Thought I would share it with my friends
(most of whom are like-minded in this regard)
~~Vade
------------------------------------------
Dr Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet
Dear Dr. Laura,
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that (Leviticus 18:22) clearly states it to be an abomination.
End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them.
1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev.1:9). The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in (Exodus 21:7). In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev.15:19-24). The problem is, how do tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. (Lev. 25:44) states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians.Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. (Exodus 35:2) clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
7. (Lev. 21:20) states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by (Lev.19:27). How should they die?
9. I know from (Lev.11:6-8) that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates (Lev. 19:19) by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
Your devoted fan, Jim
Vade's "I'd rather be at Pennsic" Blog: DAY 5
Okay, my last blog gave me an idea. I'm leaving, Hell or high water!
"We have WAYS of getting to Pennzikken!"
Okay, okay. I actually just got a call stating that my flight has been scheduled for TOMORROW! I tell ya, with these people it's "HURRY UP AND... wait."
and wait...
and wait. . .
and WAIT. . .
And just when you've given up hope, stopped planning "okay, if i get here by THIS day, here's what I have to do and how much time I have..." then BOOM. You're leaving in a few hours.
And actually, I have to leave at 4 am for a 10 o'clock flight cause we live so far away from Heathrow Airport. But you won't hear me complain about THAT!
I just called a friend on site who put me on speaker phone and I got to talk with a whole group of my wonderful friends. I don't know that I've ever felt so loved as during that phonecall. Thank you to the Three Weasels and my camp, Circle, for putting a great big smile on my face.
Someone asked me a little bit ago "does it feel like you're actually leaving?" To which I had to reply
"Yes... cause for the first day in 6 weeks, I'm not pissed off."
: D>
Yeah, I'm that happy that I'll do a "d-smiley."
So, finally, after weeks and weeks of waiting, uncertainty and getting jerked around by officials, I'm finally going home. And I don't just mean home "pennsichome" but actually HOME home!
I can't wait to see all of you...
...if someone has something for windburn, have it ready cause the g-forces have been a bit much.
HAIL!
