      <title>What's in a name?</title>

										&lt;div&gt;I just looked up the meaning of my name, Derek. Apparently one of the meanings is "power of the tribe" ( http://www.thinkbabynames.com/meaning/1/Derek" ).  I kinda like that...&#xD;
&#xD;
I found that the more common meaning is "Ruler of the People", which is what I remember my mother telling me. That meaning makes me uncomfortable. I would much rather collaborate than rule. However... taking the project I created called the Vegan Bus across the country to Burning Man this year did put me into a leadership type of role in instances of crisis (there were many). I found that in those situations I had a strength to guide the group, and didn't mind taking that role. I felt wobbly on my leadership feet, but I also felt an underlying strength emerging. Captain of a ship on its first time at sea. My impulse is to be always humble. But there is a strength that compassion needs, it is not passive. And making the world better is both a struggle and a dance. So perhaps I am not a ruler, but a leader when necessary. &#xD;
