Ever since we got this new car, we've been driving way much more than usual. It is so awesome to drive in the city and on the highway. Last weekend we drove to Jyväskylä to watch the women's Superpesis match and it was such a difference compared to the other times I have been driving that road. I was always scared crapless because it always seemed like such a harrowing journey but it was sweet in this car. Anyway, it is a Honda Jazz. It is called a Fit in the states. They couldn't market the car here in this Northern "Scandanavian" area as the Fit because Fitta means twat in Swedish. That would so not be a deterrent for me ;).

In my grief over finding out about Eugen Weber, I found out that there is an Annenberg channel where I can watch programming in progress and other videos on demand. I have been mainlining the Western Tradition all day long. Relief. I am ecstatic.

Today, I was jonesing for those History lectures by Dr. Eugen Weber. I went in search of them on the net and found out that he passed away this year in May. I am so verklempt. I can't believe it. I loved his lectures. I hope I can find them. He was so awesome. Maybe I will reread one of the three books of his that I own.

So, I finally get back to Helsinki safely and both yesterday and today, the Finn has dragged me out of the flat. Each time we came back, I fell out with jetlag. One highlight of today was waiting in front of the Hotel Kämp for a glimpse of the Rolling Stones and getting one. So, we saw Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Ron Woods and some back up folks, Blondi Chaplin and Bernard Fowler. No sign of Keith Richards. We heard that the band was pissed at him for being so drunk for the gig last night at Olympic Stadium. Apparently, he fell over or something. I think they had him picked up in the inner courtyard. I got an autograph from Blondi, but the other lads just went to their autos, acknowledged the fans and left. It was pretty cool, though.

So, on my last day in SoCal, my sister wants to go to the movies. We went and saw Transformers where they mention Nokia the Finnish phone and film at Hoover Dam which I just visited. So, that and the fact that there were some funny parts contributed to a good time. When we got out though, there was some drama. Just my sister had to pick up her car which made me sad that I wouldn't see her for an hour. Anyway, she came back, I visited my grandma, mom came home with some Northwoods Inn cheesebread and salad. We all ate and then headed to the airport. There, I found out my flight was an hour delayed. My brother came over and sat with us awhile before going to work a flight to Alaska. Finally, they all left and I waited at my gate. Boarding the plane, I saw Deep Roy the actor who played the Oompa Loompa in Tim Burton's Charlie & the Chocolate factory.

Finally, my aunts wanted to take me out for one last meal. We went to Shogun, like Benihana's where the comical chef prepares the meal with great theatrics right in front of you. It was very nice and funny and delicious and sad. We all tried not to cry as we parted ways.

So, it was my cousin's birthday. We bought him some prezzies, lunch and a cake. When we went to my gram's where he lives to have a little party, he was gone. In the morning our grandma was having a cow because her toilet was leaking. When I first when to hug her and say hi, she said to me, You broke my toilet. Ok, that pissed me off. I just calmly walked away and tried to help my cousin who was trying to fix the toilet. Well, after all that he wasn't anywhere to be found. Then he came in totally drunk or something. We all just were looking at each other. After much awkwardness and cooling off, my mom told him to eat and he did. Little by little he gained control. It was weird. Maybe he thought everybody forgot. He's got probs, poor guy.

I have a recipe for ranchero sauce, so, I don't know why I haven't attempted this at home. There is the problem of finding corn tortillas in Helsinki. I certainly can't make them, try finding corn flour. Ok it can be found, but these things aren't as easy as making flour tortillas. Anyway, mom took me for breakfast, again on Azusa Ave, to La Tolteca. She always calls it La Torteca, arrrrrrggghhh. So, annoying, but then again, she says sangwitch.

I had really thought that I was going to have time to go to Mexico City, but it never panned out. So, instead, my sister and I drove down to Tijuana for the day. Honey, we walked all over that bitch. Whooo, lordy. We parked in San Diego, walked across the rive to Revolucion, up to Calle 8, peeked in Sanborns, all the way too Blvd de los Heros, bought a cute bag at CECUT, mosied around the Zona Rio shopping mall and then went back the way we came; well, almost and we discovered a Costco there. I kick myself for not buying those cahas de madera at Sanborn's.
