We've not yet met in person, but I know I could pick Mike out in a crowd just by honing in on that fun and good energy he exudes. It is evident in his art as well. He's one of those people who WOWS you from the get go. May all the naturally good energy you give off circle back around and replenish your soul tenfold.

about me
Free-spirited gay artist. Sometimes called "Goat" by my friends. Quick with a smile. Pass for many years younger. (...and beginning to question why that's really important.) I enjoy a spiritual connection to things that's currently described as somewhat neo-pagan. I believe that sex is a celebration and not a competition. (Body Electric Grad)
I'm in love with the Southwest. I visited Santa Fe after another local Atlanta artist said "It will change your mind about color." Well it changed more than that. Much of my subject matter has completely changed since that trip and a later visit to Sedona. Even after growing up on the Florida coast, I've NEVER seen skies like those in the West. When I paint them, they're hard to exaggerate. The mix of cultures--hispanic and Native American--and their way with colorful, spiritual artistic expression will continue to inspire me. I'm very much a city boy and not a big country-western music fan though. Or at least not until I've had two beers, and then I want to be a star. I learned that when a former partner (and now best friend) had me take two-step lessons and danced at an Atlanta C&W bar. (For those that are guessing initials in that context, like S&M, B&D, GWM, etc. it's just "Country and Western.) I have been known to twang a serious rendition of "Honky Tonk Angel" in the shower.
I still have Portugal, Greece, South Africa and Spain to paint, but most of the time the brushes demand that it be something Southwestern.
Change of subject: Brand-name status items? I don't get it. I'd rather see those Calvins on the floor.
Two of my favorite quotations:
"Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly." --G.K. Chesterton. I found myself being tired of feeling angry about so much. Reading this quote changed my life (whether I believe in traditional angels or not).
"A lifetime of disco is too high a price to pay for my sexuality." --Quentin Crisp
Poke around my website, especially my fine art page:

Inspired by the retablos, or altar panels, I saw out west in the small churches in New Mexico.
"Fiesta Dress," one of my Southwest inspired paintings, from Santa Fe. Saw it in the window and just had to paint it (using some of my photos from AZ and NM). It has just sold to two women that have a Texas bedroom. I'm excited for me and them.
A tribe friend asked about it, so I'll copy my reply below. Atlanta is experiencing flooding like it's never seen before with record rain in the last couple of days. Our drought is GONE.
We just barely avoided a flooded basement when we discovered an exterior landscape drain/catch basin covered with debris AND a disconnected downspout on the patio. Two other downspouts need re-routing away from the house because the underground piping we installed couldn't take it all. The drain on one sid...

My little girl kitty Bebop left us today.
About six years ago last May Day, my best friend and room mate Roy called me at work to say he was holding a tiny Siamese kitten in his hands. He and his litter mates had been born to a feral mother under our tool shed out back and mama cat was moving them to another nearby location. That first kitten was Cecil. When they were old enough, the three kittens were adopted out and we took the two that looked most like Siamese. Cecil and Bebop. The vet...

I just returned from Cartersville, GA this evening after having won an award. Today I won second place, painting category, in the juried show of the Artists Guild of Northwest Georgia, hosted by the Booth Museum of Western Art. The painting, "South by Southwest" is of a barrel cactus sliced open to reveal a watermelon inside. Although I've been painting for most of my life, this year is the first year I've chosen to take it full-time. This was my first juried competition, so the award is deep...

Please, PLEASE understand that I'm NOT seeking compliments with this blog. I prefer them unsolicited and am grateful when they come, and even more grateful when they come honestly from someone next to me in bed. This is just an observation about things I bet many of you can relate to but don't always feel comfortable enough to share. For younger readers, something you may not always get to hear. There IS life after your Adonis years.
I never lie about my age. I'm 61, but often wish I'd pre...

I was sitting in an Atlanta restaurant having lunch yesterday (King Holiday), just as CNN began the re-broadcast of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech. I don't know how long it's been since I listened to that, but I sat there for its entirety, hearing it again as if it were new. There was an African-American woman seated below the TV and, like me, remained there until its end after she'd finished her meal. I wondered "What must she be feeling?" It surprised me to find myself we...
