I feel the need to apologize....(X-posted from LJ)
Mon, March 3, 2008 - 6:18 PM***********************
Guten Tag, mein Damen und Herren! (did I do that right?)
So, it has come to my attention that I may have caused a bit of a thing....
You all have seen the sneaky hitler, no doubt, around faire....and i actually did it, quickly, at morning meeting.
I had no idea how offensive some might find that bit, for whatever reason, be it one's Jewish background, or being tired of people only ever equating Germany and its history with that dark period of time....
I am so sorry. Truly.
It started off as a jokey little thing that a friend outside of faire showed me, I founfd it amusing, and showed to some pals at faire...and, well, it snowballed...people co-opted the bit and made a game of it.
It genuinely did not occur to me, that while, yes, it was about a maniac that took the world to war and killed countless innocent people, that it would be an unwelcome jibe to many....
Again, I am truly sorry, and beg a favor of you all...
If something like hits comes up again, please do not hesitate to come to me or anyone on the staff to put the kibosh on it.
Seriously, you know that I respect your guild(s) for your work and sense of community, So I would never desire to offend any one of you, I hold you all dear to me....so if I ever do something dumb and half-cocked like that, just tell me, and I will quash it....
So yeah, I'm super sorry to have offended, please know it was not my intent at all....
See you all on site.
cheers!
jose

Trey parker once said, "As soon as we decide something is too sacred to make fun of, everything else we've done becomes incredibly offensive."
I was going to go off on a tangent about people who are offended by some types of humor not being forced to endure it, but, in the case of morning meeting, they are. So, my solution is this: No more morning meeting. |

Damnit, don't apologize. Your intentions are really good, but someone's always going to be offended about something. So don't bother. People are dumb. Sneaky Hitler is fucking funny. That's all I'm sayin.

So what did I tell you about Jose? This is an evolved, stand up guy.

Tyler - Love the Parker quote, and I'm with you...though they are still happening, only on Saturdays....
Andi - I love you. Marry me! Dennis - you are, as always, too kind.... |

Robin Williams had been criticised by gay [GLBT] groups for the extravagant way in which he had portrayed them in his stand-up performances. It was an issue that he had addressed in some length in his 1992 Playboy interview.
I understand what they're talking about and I have tried to cut back a little [he conceded]. I can see their point because they have always been portrayed as being that way. But don't tell me, if you walk down a street in San Francisco, you won't see a lot of people that . . . How do you not offend anyone. Finally you just say, '[Screw] it. I have to do what I do. If it pisses you off, I still do other things that piss other people off.' I've got the born-again Christians after my ass because I defend gays, and gays are mad at me because I do effeminiate characters. You can't keep modifying or you're like a chamelon in front of a mirror. I am impressed that you have recognized that you could offend someone and respect you even more for appologizing.... but it has also been said.. that the moment you act like a thing has never happened.. then you take away from the memery that it did.. and that is more offensive than anyone. I am Jewish... I lost more family than I can count.. and yet... what you did was funny.. and that is important |

Jose,
Stop Apologizing Please!!! Wow this has blown up into a monster and this was not my intent at all. As I said in the original post we have fun, poke poke morning meeting stuff ok My real aim was not to have that seen in the streets again (witch I did see last year), that’s all. But you were not the one doing it ....and you really have NO CONTROL over what people will run with and not... I mean besides the fact it is offensive, it's also REALLLLLLLLLY not period and not with the theme of what were trying to do at all. IM not trying be the grand arbiter of what is funny and what is not, I cant, I was just expressing an opinion (a bit too forcefully) After all the thread was be careful with comedy.... And actually playing a German at faire has nothing to do with why I think the Gig is poop... So uh anyway as the person who started this I am officially ending it. I call shenanigans and I will have a plate of cookies for Jose on Saturday morning. Peace, Love, Fight Fascism where ever you find it |

As the oldest German at faire.
Ja dude- it wasn't you. It was all the little Jose clones thinking they were as funny as you. We who portray Germans are sensitive to this and it's not funny. SIx million times NOT FUNNY. Jose- Like Franz Leibchen, famous German playwright said, thanks- we love you. We understand. The rest of you- just shut up and take the clue. Ethnic jokes require understanding, timming and ..and..OMFG-intelligence. Miss any of these three ingredients and you have the "fire triangle",i.e. an explosive situation. No, Jose didn't HAVE TO apologize. Even we said that. But people- allow the man to be his gracious self. Here's to a wunderbar upcomming faire season! Everyone who reads this- take two sins outa petty cash from the old chaplain. Ein, zwei, Zuffa! |
