Hong Kong Chrysanthemum Factory

EXPLOSION IN THE HONG KONG CHRYSANTHEMUM FACTORY

What touched it off?
Spontaneous combustion, maybe,
of accumulated sweatshop afternoons
fired by a pollen-sorter's idly lustful reverie?
Whatever.
Sudden devastation bloomed.
Dye vats burst to flinders.
Pistils and stamens missiled through the plant
while palletloads of stems stacked ceiling-high
collapsed to bury helpless victims.
White-smocked assembly-line technicians,
Chinese women, Filippinas,
Thais, Malaysians, Balinese, Burmese,
fled screaming in a fusillade of leaves.
The supervisor, a Japanese
touched with the gift of tongues,
roared maledictions in half a dozen languages
with frenzied pleas for orderly evacuation--
universally ignored.

And in the aftermath,
a ghostly silence everywhere
as everywhere
the bonewhite petals softly fell.

Re: Star of David in Natal Chart - What does it mean? (in < MAZDAYASNA >) An ancient Hebrew tradition calls the "Star of David" by another name, "The Shield of David." The story was that King David's natal chart had two Grand Trines, making the figure of a six-pointed star. The word "shield in Hebrew (magen) is also u... read more

Re: Real Or No Real? (in Religious Smoker) Yes, Adam, the Masonic Order of DeMolay, for the sons of Freemasons, was named for Jacques DeMolay, the Grandmaster of the Knights Templar. And I don't think anyone claimed that the famous Shroud was DeMolay's burial cloth, rather it was used to... read more

Re: "The Origins of Christianity and the Quest for the Historical Jesus Christ" (in Religious Smoker) >>>Tacitus never mentions the name "Jesus.<<<

Quite correct; please pardon my sloppy syntax. I should have written that Tacitus refers to Jesus indirectly under the title of "Chrestus" and could hardly be considered an adequate record. He is... read more

My Blog

Well, there has been a lot said in many places about the current tendency toward self-destruction exhibited by the wingnuts of the far right. Finally, the depth of their self-hatred becomes apparent. Yes, folks, it's true; the neocons are finally shooting themselves, not in the foot at all, but directly to the brain. Think about it, where does most of their support come from? What segment of the population do they most try to attract? If you said, the fundamentalist christianoids, I wou... read more

Epistemology: the study of the method and grounds of knowledge, esp. with reference to its limits and validity.

Source: Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Vol. I.

Yes, folks, epistemology is the branch of philosophy that deals with the question of how we know things, how well we can know them and how much reliance we can place on what we know. For my money, this is the central study in philosophy, asking the pivotal questions on which everything else depends. If we don... read more

When I had just returned from Wisconsin and other parts of the Frozen North and came back to my old hometown of Jacksonville, FL, some 25 years ago or more, I lived with my mother for a while. Since this is not my idea of comfort or privacy, Mom having been a dyed-in-the-bottle alcoholic, I began searching the Yellow Pages one day to seek an alternative. Mom wanted to know what I was looking for. "An apartment locator service," I answered. Then she wanted to know what that might be.

In the spirit of freedom.

It is a shame that spirituality is so often confused with or included in religion. I have done my best to find ways of explaining what I see as the difference between the two, and have finally found a perfectly coherent explanation. It was written by Jane Brody in her wonderful book on the process of dying and how to handle the experience, "Jane Brody's Guide to the Great Beyond." I trust Ms. Brody will forgive a brief quote from her book if I recommend the b... read more

My beliefs about God have changed greatly since I first consciously encountered him at the age of about 35. For a long time after I experienced several instances of answered prayers, I tried very hard to believe in the existence of an actual spiritual entity of total power and love. I even succeeded in believing that at times, Ultimately, however, I began to have questions about this idea that I could not answer with the traditional beliefs. I experience God now on two distinct levels wh... read more

This man, is capable of so much. There is more to him than meets the eye. I am fortunate to be able to call him friend. His mind remains open and his friends are never judged. I count on his balanced influence to keep my perspectives on the topics that are discussed. He is wise, openhearted, kind and considerate. Patience and understanding, are his top virtues. Hugs and Love!
Brightest Blessings

The Mayfly Sermon

THE MAYFLY SERMON

Huddle closer to the guttering fire
and gather up the warm, fragmented light
to weave with hot beseechments of desire
a whispered charm to hold against the night.
Snatch what you may before your passion's spent,
then rake the ashes for love's last assent;
the flesh you thought to borrow on was lent
for, oh so brief a time--so brief a flight.
