gills

fishing on the dock, i caught a minnow
and released her far away from my line
but she homed in again
on my bait, and swallowed it
whole without hesitation

once the hook hit her gut
she fought with fury, invincible
like a blade slicing up the surface

at every turn, her skin flecked sparks
silver green along the lake; she glistened
as i pulled her to the planks

her gills seemed eager
to suck in the oxygen,
delicate gills, crimson
crisp filaments soft to the touch,
yet sharp enough to lacerate

i thought of the smooth flesh packed
around her little white bones
and the vibrant oranges
and yellows of her spawn
and her white bladder
like a finger baloon

her eyes were so much tinier than mine
but deeper and blackened
iris blending in with retina
they never altered, even as i stared
as she twisted and shivered in the sun

about me
I'm outgoing and social, and get along with most everyone. I organize a social club here in SF, so am discovering lots of new venues this year all around the city. I also like to write, swim in the ocean, explore new restaurants, and participate in men's circles. I have a love for animals, and am especially a dog-person. In my creative life I'm a poet and a writer. I used to teach kids creative writing. I am also the founder of a haiku poetry website.

I was raised in Southern California, in a town named La Crescenta which borders a region of wilderness where coyote roam. Occasionally they'd venture out into our street. Most summers of my early childhood I spent fly fishing and wandering around the lakes and farms near Twin Falls Idaho, where my grandparents lived. Later my parents turned me into a traveler, and I've kept this orientation ever since. Early highlights include a year in Tahiti, and a 40 foot trimaran sailboat that my father built with his own hands, then later sailed across the Pacific. More recent travels include Thailand, Philippines, Hong Kong, Canada, England, France, Spain, Morocca and India. On two occasions I've trekked across the United States; once from LA to Denver, and again from Phoenix to Oklahoma City. I've also lived for years in London. Most people dream of great travel adventures. I've been fortunate to have lived them.

My Testimonials

September 29, 2005
One of the things I appreciate most about Alex is that he embodies the concept of "Shiva' in the truest of sense. This Shiva not only honors and worships goddess energy in all her manifestatons and forms, but he shows up fully present in the moment -- willing to create and hold safe, sacred space for "Shakti" to open and flow. Alex is strong of mind, gentle of heart, and mindful in action. He can be fun and playful, or serious and intentional, as the moment calls for. I love his smile. And his heart. Both are infectious. May we all be afflicted. Namaste.

when I think about Alex I think about rain, running through it getting drenched and laughter, so much laughter because when you are running in the rain after meditation at Spirit Rock and your heart is so clear all that comes of the experience of getting soaking wet is laughter at the sheer joy of it all and how beautiful the world really is when you are splashing in puddles with a friend that you love in a night that can be any night in a time that know no boundries
even though our friendship in this realm has been short so far I can turn to Alex with anything and I know he'll do his best to understand and be there even in the rain . . .

In my experience Alex is the honest and passionate person he is here to communicate with. He's a big smiler and loves a joke. He's thoughtful, considerate, generous and kind.

He works hard and likes to earn money. He takes responsibility for his actions and encourages others to do so too.

He's a lovely man and and I am happy to call him my friend although these days we don't see one another so much (geographical distance makes this tricky) I would love to see him more frequently. We speak on the phone and our conversations switch from the serious to the bizarre to the hilarious to the mundane to the tragic to the ... well we're talkers rhubarb, rhubarb, rhubarb - and writers. He composes a great letter when he makes the time.

Get to know him. You won't be sorry :-)
