Ranting and Rambling

No ATS workshop, but still a start into teaching that I feel good about

Boy, that was a major bummer, and part of me is crushed. I had *one* person show up for my workshop :-( I learned that the pre-registration that was supposed to be set up was not there - that leaves me upset and disappointed, that is just not up to my expectations. I am not sure whether the lack of interest comes from a lack of interest in ATS in Pittsburgh, from people getting discouraged by the lack of the announced pre-registration, or from me being myself, opinionated and outspoken, which I am sure doesn't work for everybody.

Anyways, I feel good that I prepared properly and that I was ready to give a good workshop - I kept my standards, and didn't show up unprepared and leave people disappointed. And, some things were happening in my favor: I The one student who was there is a martial artist who was looking for movement instruction, so I decided to throw out all plans, and do what I love - teach and share what I know. I had a great time working with her, which was very challenging, because she is an extremely well-trained and strong person, but she has little awareness and control of the muscles one uses a lot in bellydance, which makes a lot of sense to me. To my amazement, she could do a glute-based shimmy without making an effort. We didn't do much dancing (I tried to work towards showing her movements she can succeed in), but I think she learned a lot what she was looking for - and I now have a private student, and she will recommend me to her martial arts group, they are looking for a bellydance instructor to share with the group what I have done today. So, keeping my fingers crossed that works out - being a geek, I'd totally dig that!

So, this was really not what I had hoped for, but through giving it my very best, I hope this will turn into a good opportunity. Now, I remain sad that I need to put the ATS class on ice - that sucks, I really, really, really wanna do more ATS! Damn. But, not quite sure how to get there.

Hi Steffi,

Is there still a studio on Forbes Ave called "High Kicks" that has dance and martial arts classes?

Showcasing ATS in a performance.
Okay ....my two cents.

You should re-form Tribe Taksim with a small and dedicated group of dancers. Perform around for free like Kiva Han, festivals, sidewalk sales, festivals, etc. Check with the Carnegie Library system. Use the performances as a way to promote your workshops.

You have to show people what ATS is. People who are already bellydancing have the style they like. Recruit people who see you in action.

This might help.
