about me
Just your average queer Zen Buddhist Spanish linguistics grad student trying to enjoy life and save the world in his spare time. (Or is it trying to save me.) I used to have a life, but it ran away. :-( Has anyone seen it? I would be very grateful for any information leading to it's return or acquiring a new one.

In case you were interested...

Well, I haven't blogged in a while due to the beginning of another semester. Academic life is so weird. One day you are on vacation, the next your life is full of frenetic activity.

The most taxing and rewarding part of it all is teaching. Heck, that's why I got into this game to begin with! I both love and hate working with students. They are great for keeping the ego in check. I can walk into class one day thinking that I am all that and a bag of chips. Inevitably, that is the d... read more

Tuesday Tuffy left his current incarnation. Tuffy was not my cat but was one of the many cats that live among us here at the Sweetwater Zen Center where I live. You can probably see from the picture that how Tuffy got his name. He had evidently had a long and full life as a Tomcat before he came to live with us. He ruled over all the cats on this property and kept unwelcome guests away. Despite his toughness, he was also one of the most loving of cats. He loved people and always came up... read more

Well, the sesshin ended today. Despite all my moaning and hesitation it was wonderful. It is hard to explain the effects of ten days spent in zazen so I won't even try. One of the high points of this ten days was the mandala we made as a community in celebration of the new year. That is it in the picture. More than the mandala itself, the experience of creating it was transformational.

It is hard to come out of all that and go back to work tomorrow. However, life goes on and what is ... read more

I find myself constantly falling in love with the cyclical nature of life. A busy semester has given way to time off. A bunch of time spent alone has given way to time with family and friends. The cold and rain come only to give way to sunshine and warmth. And all these things will eventually return to the other state. This cycling, this impermanence are things I have come to count on. All things arise and all things fade. Nothing is forever. All is possible. Ain't life grand!
