"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? ...Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you...
It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
- Marianne Williamson (quoted by Nelson Mandela in his inaugural address)

"Okay... so here are some things for everyone...
Volunteer- It's not just for participation! It can offset costs.
Performers in the fire conclave sometimes get a reduced ticket price. (If you are not involved already, it is probably too late.)
Baristas, cashiers, and support staff split the tips each shift in the tip jar. They are always looking for people plus they give a free meal pog for each shift worked. Not a lot, but if you plan this in advance, you could end up paying your gas money, and getting fed. Be aware shifts are 3-4 hours long 24 hours a day.
Tear down- if you volunteer to help inventory with the cafe, and bust your ass for a few days, you get fed and get a partial to full ticket reimbursement. Plus you get to stay on the playa longer. The year I was on unemployment I did this. It worked fabulously. It was cheaper for me to be on the playa (I was getting fed) than it did to stay home.
Do an exodus flagger shift... last time I remember, you might actually get paid.
Volunteer for the kitchen, you get fed.
Get in with a facet of the organization with that you like. All I'm gonna say is that if you show up, do your job, and are fun to hang out with, you would be amazed what opens up. Just be aware of how much time you are devoting to it. And if you find something you really like... it won't feel like work and many times you get extra time on the playa.
(Notice the trend that you are working for it. Fair exchange of energy.)
Travel-
The only obvious one here is that whenever possible, carpool.
If you have a lot of space... rent space out in your car for someone else's stuff or take another rider.
Get your water as close to the playa as possible to reduce your gas consumption.
Packing-
Veterans- pack lighter... you know you will only use about half of what you bring.
Newbies- pack what you need.. you don't know yet what will and what won't work for you yet.
VALUE VILLAGE- it is going to get trashed anyway. And if you are a newbie... I mean TRAAAAAASHED.
Trading-
If you have developed relationships with people who are going... barter. But don't whine about being poor. This doesn't go over well. And if you know that person will hold their end of the bargan, do your side of it first.
And finally- people are more likely to gift you stuff if you-
Play nice.
Hold integrity.
Share what you can.
Are grateful. I mean really grateful. Not pretend grateful because deep down you think you are entitled to have a free ride in this "gift economy".
Don't whine.
Have a back-up self reliant plan.
Pay it forward."
TICKETS-- check out the bottom of the ticket page burningman.com for LOW-INCOME and SCHOLARSHIP tickets. This is how I made it my first year-- takes a little planning though.
Check ebay and craigslist
Sign on to the local/regional lists-- there are always people trying to sell their tickets AT PRICE when plans change. This means no $300 ticket for you, but the $210 ones!

Why Do You Do What You Do? ..... An excellent question....
.....because I can't stop dancing.
......to be a participant, and not an observer.
.......to be a contributor, and not a consumer.
........this is my last chance.
.........to give others the excuse they need to be themselves.
..........it makes my head hot and my skin tingle.
...........it's just a cover-up for my super powers.
............to amuse myself.
.............why not?
..............because I was hoping you would ask that... and wanted to share something beautiful.
"The only person you really have to make happy is you.
When you understand that what most people really, really want is simply to feel good about themselves, and when you realize that with just a few well-chosen words you can help virtually anyone on the planet instantly achieve this, you begin to realize just how simple life is, how powerful you are, and that love is the key.
Has anyone ever told you that you have a knack for making people feel special? Important? Like they really matter?
I should know. "
~The Universe
"A thousand half-loves
must be foresaken to take
one whole heart home
Let the lover be disgraceful, crazy,
absentminded. Someone sober
will worry about things going badly.
Let the lover be.
True loves don't finally
meet somewhere.
They're in each other all along."
~Rumi~
Happiness is not a state to arrive at, but a manner of traveling. It's a conscious choice. Be happy. Be grateful. Be. Here. Now.
''You were once Wild here. Don't let them Tame you''
~Oscar Wilde
"Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I'll meet you there...
Let the beauty we love be what we do.
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground"
~Rumi~
The secret to happiness is taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life
And elevating them
To art.

I wrote this in my Jr. year ('05) of Evergreen, during my hippie class Rhythmic Meditations. All of my other classes were upper-division ecological + psychological sciences, which is what I'm interested in but realize it's not for everyone. RM is a class I wish everyone in the world would take-- it combined meditation, community, communication, and self-reflection; it taught me how to better understand myself and my relation to my friends, family, and world. It taught me to pay ATTENTION to m...

Oh, the Places You'll Go!
Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.
You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."
With your head full of brains and your shoes full...

I love coming home, because my pack-rat ways have saved so much interesting stuff for me to find later. Today I found a file with all sorts of old assignments from Evergreen in it-- someday I'll post the entirety of my "evolution of hominid music" or "playing with yourself?" papers. What I really wanted to share today, though, are some poems I wrote in a "Words to Flesh" yoga+poetry class during my, what freshman year? Seems like a lifetime ago. They still ring true for me now, maybe others w...
